Starting strangeness!
« on: February 20, 2009, 12:10:40 AM »

I had mentioned this before in a previous thread but don't remember where.

More often than not, the -F has to hit the starter a few times before it actually cranks. Today, it went kind of crazy -

I was letting someone else drive, had the key in my pocket.. they got in, and hit the brake + start; the starter went CRAZY rapidly attempting to start the car but failing until we hit the ignition button again. Tried it again, and it started just fine.. was kind of weird. Not sure what to think of it. I'm wondering if some part of the anti-theft system wasn't seeing the key and that's why it couldnt get the car to start? Just a shot in the dark...

If it happens again, try changing the key's batteries.

(Did you drop the key in a swamp of something?   angel)

Nope... I dont think that key has even seen a drop of water! Same for my infiniti. I'm pretty good with THAT kind of stuff. Smiley

I'm still waiting to find out what happens when the battery in the key completely dies. The car has no key hole except the trunk. The infiniti at least had one on the driver's door, plus it had the 'dead battery bay' for the key-fob if it was dead.. the lexus has no such thing. I guess i should read the manual.

When the key's battery gets week, the range drops dramatically, you can't start the car with the key on the passenger seat, for instance, or on the backseat (happened to me once).  But it wouldn't explain what you've described.  Edit: maybe it was going in and out of range rapidly (authorizing and denying start), due to a failing batt?

Usually security type devices like FOBs will completely shutdown at a threshold power/voltage level. Oscillation in access is not a desirable trait for these kind of applications. But then again, what do I know....

Weak battery in the FOB does not sound right on such new car
Can it really go weak that quickly?
Do you have spare FOB to try out?

This makes sense to me.  Maybe then it's a faulty wire/contact with the parking break sensor?  If it's not in park it won't start, right?  I don't know, next time, I'd take it to the dealer.

Now, that sounds plausible!

If you're like me, who sometimes forgets to lock the car and tries to do it 300ft away in the parking lot all the time...or if you use it to open up the windows from a distance as soon as possible in the summer...or if you like my wife, who like to make sure it's lock every 50ft...yes, the poor key fob has a hard time with me.  I've changed the battery on the M35 once, and I'm about to do it again on the FX.  A new battery does wonders for range, I'm addicted. I'm hoping it won't happen again. It doesn't appear to be a battery issue thus far. Will see.. Sad
