Transmission strangeness
« on: February 18, 2009, 12:56:53 AM »

About 2 days ago I was leaving the house for work - not cold at all outside, I think maybe mid-high 70's. For some reason while coasting down the road on the way out of my development I decided to shift into manual mode (I don't remember if I did it with paddle shifters or stick) - but at any rate, when I came to a complete stop the car was in 2nd gear and stayed there. It wouldn't allow me to manually shift out of second through the paddles, stick, or by putting it back into full-auto mode. I have NEVER seen the car hang out in 2nd at a stop so I thought it was kind of strange. I tried to reproduce it the next day from a cold start, and wasn't able to... not sure what to think of this behavior. The car drove fine and no mayday lights came on, so all I can do is assume it was a one time thing or something the transmission was doing to protect itself?

mine shifts down to 3 when i'm in manumatic and moving slowly.  it shifts to 1 when i'm manumatic and stopped.  there is no moving it out of 1 when stopped.  you can only move downwards from 3 without applying pressure to the accelerator.

Yeah - the -F progressively downshifts to the appropriate gear (in manual mode) if you don't do it yourself. It goes to 1 when stopped. This was bizarre because it went to 2 when stopped, and wouldn't drop into first at all...

The fact that it was still in 2nd while stopped may not be a problem
In BMWs, when you use manual mode it always stays in 2nd when stopped, unless you paddle it to 1st
Same goes for full-auto mode, i dont think car ever sees 1st gear

My Sequoia stays in 4th in manual mode when stopped, or 3rd or 2nd, unless you paddle it to 1st.

Yes.. but the -F always drops to 1st gear (with exception of this one time!).. that's why it's strange. Sad

Yeah.. but it's actually in 1st, isnt it? It will simply only shift up into 4th before you have to intervene?
