Wheel consideration...
« on: September 02, 2009, 01:46:48 AM »

So i'm considering biting the bullet and changing out the stock wheels on my car. I'm absolutely in love with these:

http://www.wald.co.jp/english/catalog/wheel/m13/top.jpg

http://www.wald.co.jp/english/catalog/wheel/m13.html

Disregarding the body kit, of course... and then keep in mind they'd be on a black car. I think I prefer the "black x polish" "black alumite"..

The config on the car in the pics is exactly the look I want, but they are:

F:20x9 245/30
R:20x10 255/30 w/ the rear being stretched. Anyone have any experience with this?

Any honest opinions? I'm not really good at this kinda stuff.. eg, I know I like the rims on the silver car; but would they still have the same 'look' on a black car?

Also, anyone know of any similarly designed rims?

I like the wheels.  Sweet look.  Wald is usually mild..but damn that kit is pretty aggresive...

the wheels specs sound fine, the tires don't need to be those specs... you don't need to stretch... I am going to say that for the "add" they pushed the offsets as aggresive as they could - probably even more and thus required the stretch tires... a 20x10 wheel, with good offsets and 275 or 285 tires is what you would want.

I like the look..... I would even look at the matte black face with the chrome lip... your stock wheel color is a nice dark color so the matte with a little bit of bling (lips) might be nice.

but your choice of color combo would look good.  I am sure someone good at photo shop can rock a pic for you...

wald is a solid brand!

got dang even the one peice wheel version looks sweet!!! I am really diggin this wheel.... Traffic Star wheel make a solid star style wheel - I actually thought it was the traffic star wheel, but this one looks better!

Wheels look good
They probably will look as good on black car as well
How come they're only 255 on the back?
Seems a bit skinny

I agree with lawman. A 20x10 with a 255 is wayyyyy too skinny. I had 20x10 with a 285 on my G35. Also had a 19x9.5 with a 275. Lawman knows wheel setups. I prefer a wider wheel with a fat tire. Many calculations come into play. I rather sacrifice wheel width/offset to fit a decent size tire.

Oz...I like those wheels. Wald makes great stuff. I like the body kit, normally I don't like Wald body kits.

So i'll gladly show my ignorance on this one (wheels - which i have stated i know nothing about before!) ... they "stretched" the tires in order to get a shorter sidewall, right? Is this done just for look or also fender clearance? If I went with a wider (appropriate) tire but the same offset they used in the rear, it's likely the tire would rub; right (unless I roll the fenders?)?

Everyone else - thanks for the feedback.. much appreciated

RH:

They are 34-38lbs each. A little heavier than stock.

Yeah 255 does sound a little skinny...  Are we getting some agressive offsets here that someone is keeping under wraps Huh?

You know we know our tires and wheels. hahahah

Oz you will usually see the Japan wheel companies use cars that are modded to get aggreseive offsets.  The wheels look flush to the car and are visually more appealing.  It is hard to tell how much body work was done on the car - pulled fenders, rolled or cut fenders will all help get a wider wheel, lower offset.  The stretched tire will also help allow a wider wheel, lower offset to fit within the car fender.

Usually the JDM rides that are shown, usually have this work done to show off the wheel....

Oz check on CL (pm cody - blue is-f from hawaii) I would bet he knows the range of offsets.  Determine how far you can go and/or how far you are willing to go (roll fenders, pull, etc.).

since you are on COs and dropped you can go lower than a normal plug and play offset.

but since I would bet that is-f had some work done, be cautious of just getting the same offsets - research first.  Also know that even if the offsets in the pics are too much, you can still get the same look with proper offsets for your ride.

No.. no under wraps.. I totally forgot to ask what the offsets were on the show car Smiley

That was actually my first question to them, they said that car does not have rolled/modified fenders which is why I was surprised they got the above fitment ^^^.. I just emailed them and asked them what the offsets for the official car above are.

I also asked them about doing an 20x11 rear, to which they responded:

Quote
Sounds like you're more performance minded, and at the same time want the aggressive wide look in the rear.

We can custom build a 20x11 with a et50 offset. You'll have to run a rounded 295/25-20" tire though.

I pinged the D2 forged folks but I can't remember what response they had regarding the fitments for the IS-F's theyve done..

So.. i'm not sure what to do... arghhhhhh (charlie brown)

(PS, cody should come back here Smiley )

Damn these guys are quick:

Quote
Correct. Japan is strange with the tire sizes they use because of their DOT standards. It's quite backwards over there.

We'd recommend a 285/25-20 rear.

If we use a 20x10 to 20x10.5, the offset will range from a 40 to 45.

okay... the other thing is also sometimes the JDM companies will put the aggresive wheel on the car for the shoot and not acutally drive it.  Not saying that is what is going on.

See thus the 255 tires on the wheel to get max offset.  Okay on CL I see the offsets are fairly "weak" looks like 20x10s are in the 42-45 range.  with mid 30 plus offset in the fronts.

Also need to make sure the wheel clear the Big brakes you have.

also ask about lip size as well. normally the higher the offset the weaker the lip size.  I assume you want some lip in the rear... the molded version (no lip) looks hot on the black IS on the site!

find out the lip size on the wheels they say... ALSO... wheel companines will usually be more conservative with wheel offsets, so there is no, "wait you told me they would fit"  a company like D2 may have go more aggresive if they have done is-fs...

there is also clark with his IS-F, he brings in wheels and may know offsets...

Which black IS on the site?!
http://www.wald.co.jp/english/catalog/wheel/m11c.html
Is the only one I saw with the casted rims.. but that's an LS Smiley

PS.. what they said re: lip:

Quote
The outer lips can be finished in chrome or black/matte black. The inner lips can be finished in black as well. The lips will be 2" and 3" respectively.

Approximate weight 34-38lbs each.

The demo vehicle runs a 20x90 20x10 w/ 245/30  and 255/30 respectively.
The rear is super stretched. There's no way to fit a 255/30 on a 20x11.
