Amazing how you get used to nice things
« on: July 25, 2008, 02:35:42 PM »

I've had lots of nice equipment on a number of nice cars, but before this LS460, I never had a car that, for instance, had the "Hold" feature or the "auto-closing" doors.

The Hold is a button on the steering wheel that when engaged, basically sets the parking brake when you come to a complete stop - like at a stoplight. It keeps you from having to sit there constantly applying pressure to the brake just to keep from rolling. Then when you're ready to go, it automatically disengages when you press the accelerator. Sounds like a small thing in a way, but it is golden when you use it for awhile ... especally in traffic

The auto closing doors are cool, too, in that you never again have to slam a door. You simply nudge it shut and as soon as it contacts the striker plate on the jamb, it grabs the door and pulls it quietly closed via an electric motor.

Not necessary, I know, but little things like this get to be so appreciated that you wonder how you'll be able to do without them in the future. Like one-touch up-and-down power windows or rain-sensing wipers, you quickly become used to them.

I doubt I'll be getting another car this nice when my lease is up, and it's going to be an adjustment to go back to a car without things like this. A devious lot, these car manufacturers ...  Grin

Those features are nice to have! Every time I see a LS...I want one even more. Maybe my next car...?

I agree Mike. Its easy to get used to being pampered.  I'm coming to terms with the same thing on a decision i'm about to make ("sacraficing"  luxuries i'm used to)..

Why wouldnt you trade in for another LS when yours is up?

I'll take it the other way.  When you get used to certain levels of performance, its hard to go back to a car that isn't tuned as aggressively.

Even "sport" models feel like they have the volume turned down.  Its disheartening in its own right.

Oz, I just figure I'll throttle back a little next time. The way I leased my LS (I traded in two vehicles, one of which I was $7,000 upside down on) I'm paying out over $1,400 a month on it, and I don't like to spend that much on a car. Even though I'll be in better shape at the end of this lease with the $7,000 paid off, I should be able to reduce my payment a bunch and still get into something nice like an M50 or something.

I dunno - I'll have to see how things look in 2 1/2 years. Hell, they may have electromagnetic rocket cars by then!  Grin

Oh, and I agree on te performance thing ... it's hard to ratchet down to milder perf.

My sister's jeep used to scare the crap out of me. Then I drove my brother in law's dodge ram 1500 quad cab. God. THAT is scary. You hit a bump on the highway and you can feel the bed shimmying for a good 5-10 seconds later.

Surprised to see you'd go back to an infiniti after your torque-lockup business Smiley

Well, hope springs eternal, and if they go to the 7-speed AT, maybe it'll fix the problem. One of the (more honest) techs agreed with me that it was partly because the gearing kept the revs so high, and when the TC re-engaged, it had to absorb a lot of rev force, or enertia. If they gear it down a little in 6 and 7, maybe it will re-engage smoothly like everyone else's. Besides, they DO know about the problem, and maybe it was dealt with in the trans redesign.

I really DID like the M, it's just that the TC "jerk" was too much for me. At $20,000 or more less than the LS, AND with a fixed trans, I might get interested again.

I hear you. But based on infiniti's design decisions i'm afraid the new M isn't gonna be a looker. I suspect they arent going to bring back the Q, and they are going to try and make the M more Q-esque.. we'll see, though.

Yeah, we don't know at this point. But given that the Q wasn't a big market success, why would they make the M more like it?  Huh?

Good point, but I think the Q wasn't successful because it was ugly (towards the end); before that I thought the car had a nice look. Infiniti doesn't have an LS/S/7/A8 competitor and I think they need one to roll with the big boys. But who knows.. infiniti is a weird brand with seemingly no lack of direction, so only time will tell. Smiley

Yes. Literally kill. As in put out to pasture. The original Q was awesome as was the original M. I hope the two don't converge and more importantly that the design trajectory of the M does not follow that of the late Q.
