Consumer Reports Calls Lexus GX460 Unsafe, Toyota Halts Sales
« on: April 14, 2010, 12:16:10 AM »

(Sorry, this is mostly an insane rant)

In what appears to be an ongoing smear campaign against toyota and lexus, consumer reports has issued a "Do not buy" suggestion for the 2010 Lexus GX460, after having a driver "deliberately sliding the 2010 GX460 lexus out of control".

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/T34fsDdVH8M&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/T34fsDdVH8M&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0</a>

I know I'm not an English major by any stretch of the imagination, but I am pretty sure I understand what "deliberately" means. I can't help but noticed the GX did NOT ROLL during this "deliberate slide" but could have ".. in a real world situation, if the vehicle were slide out on a public road in that manner, the rear wheel could hit a curb or slide off the pavement, which could cause a rollover. it's called a tripped rollover, which is the most common kind
of rollover".

So wait, they deliberately threw the video into a slide, it didn't roll, but it could have (just like every other SUV, truck, etc) based on the apparently very common "tripped rollover". Really?

And some quotes...

http://www.startribune.com/business/90731569.html

Quote
...
The magazine said the Lexus problem occurred during tests on its track. In a standard test, the driver approached a turn unusually fast, then released the accelerator pedal to simulate the response of an alarmed driver. This caused the rear of the vehicle to slide outward.

In normal cases, the electronic stability control should quickly correct the loss of control and keep the SUV on its intended path. But with the GX 460, the stability control took too long to adjust, which could cause a rollover accident if one of the sliding wheels were to strike the curb or another obstacle, said Gabriel Shenhar, Consumer Reports' senior auto test engineer who was one of four testers who experienced the problem.

The magazine said it is not aware of any reports of the GX 460 rolling over. It tested two separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither rolled over.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but couldn't (and shouldn't) the same rollover be triggered in ANY other SUV, car, truck, van.. if it were to (recklessly or purposely) spin out of control and then slide into a piece of concrete, a ditch, etc...?

Apparently people are no longer responsible for their actions, and it's always someone else's fault.

Join in on the insanity,

http://www.google.com/search?q=lexus+gx+460+rollover&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

(And now, for some REAL rollovers):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/v1S3WjjTjfc&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/v1S3WjjTjfc&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/7nn7AhN_Nvs&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/7nn7AhN_Nvs&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0</a>

<a href="http://d.yimg.com/static.video.yahoo.com/yep/YV_YEP.swf?ver=2.2.18.2&amp;id=1974977&amp;vid=274524&amp;lang=en-us&amp;intl=us" target="_blank">http://d.yimg.com/static.video.yahoo.com/yep/YV_YEP.swf?ver=2.2.18.2&amp;id=1974977&amp;vid=274524&amp;lang=en-us&amp;intl=us</a>

So I guess the moral of the story is: If you are going to build an SUV, make sure it is capable of defying the laws of physics?

I have never trusted Consumer Reports on car buying since day one...  All the car magazines always tend to disagree with them and so do I.

I'm not a huge Toyota fan unless its an older 70s-90s model. With that being said,

I JUST HATE that the media is really blowing all of this crap out of proportion. Yes they messed up and yes they tried to keep the REAL problems under wraps (it was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen)...BUT COME ON! People are deliberately trying to get into the class action suits and get free money just because they have a Toyota/Lexus. Its really a shame that these people are willing to "lie" and go to court to sue Toyota or get out of their car payments.

I agree with you guys...the SUV did NOT rollover and yes you can rollover any SUV or car for that matter. END RANT.  Angry

I am on the opposite side of this, just because i was recently hit by a toyota, jk.  But seriously, toyota gave up on building the most reliable cars on the road a decade ago.  They've been resting on their laurels, churning out cars at the tune of the lowest bidder for years now (nothing wrong with that) trying to become the world's largest automaker.  They did it, but now they get to deal with what they decided to overlook for so long (while still advertising themselves as reliable).

The other manufacturers are having a heyday with this stuff.  At the bottom of the page as I read this was an add that says "Toyota and Lexus Owner Assistance - Buick"

Does anybody know how many vehicles get this "do not buy" rating each year?

yay... i'm slowly building a militia of supporters.   And yes, there is a TON of "toyota rebates" being handed out by not only domestic dealers but also I've heard some advertisements for toyota discounts by nissan and honda.

And ILOVEFX I was wondering that as well, the do not buy probably happens for a ton of products, but I'm not sure about something with as much R&D money in it as a vehicle.

I'm totally with you on this one.  I have been a toyota fan since elementary school when my dad purchased a 4Runner.  89 I think it was..?  We drove that thing EVERYWHERE.  Not sure how many miles were on it when we sold it but it was probably approaching 200k.  Since then I have personally owned two 3rd gen (96-02) 4Runners, one I sold with 140k (that I sank at 70k and then an S/C was added at 74k) and my current one has 210k and has been s/c'd for over 140k and is even on the original transmission.  Ever since the 4th generation 4Runner (03+) they have been garbage.  Not only were they heading more towards a highlander each generation, they didn't cut the reliable mustard compared to the older ones.  Now the interiors don't feel any better to me than a Ford.  This is in part due to ford getting better, but also Toyota falling off.  I sat in two 4Runners at the NY auto show and each one had pieces missing, not a good sign they will last!?

yeah my best friend has an 04 or 05 (i dont know) but hers is crap compared to the Jeep and the Jeep was cheaper.  But she's one of those Loyal toyota people who wouldn't have anything else "bc they are so reliable."  In fact her whole family drives toyotas or lexuses (except for one i think) for that very reason, and even though they all have had issues and always sell before 100k BECAUSE they have issues they still won't admit toyota is slipping.

If this whole fiasco isn't enough, nothing will change their mind...
