I am ready for a curtain call
« on: October 04, 2008, 05:15:56 AM »

Yesterday I pulled along side of a black 2008 Lexus SC 430 stopped at a red signal light in my Starfire Peral SC.  As we waited, the driver of the black began to lower his retractable roof.

I don't know what got into me but I immediately hit my roof switch.  There we both were, roofs lowering, his a bit ahead of mine.

As they were both lowering, cars behind us in both lanes began to honk their horns.  So too, cars passing in front of us from right to left began honking their horns.  It was a real hoot!

I could not stop laughing all the way home from that red light.  I don't know what possessed me to do what I did, but if the chance ever happens again, I am going to take a curtain call.

Hahaha.. that's awesome. Smiley

Not to already off-topic this, but how long does it take for the roof to open?

My roof opens or closes between 25 and 30 seconds.  Plenty of time to do so while stopped at a traffic red light.

30 seconds?  that seems like a long time!   Guess i should learn to be more patient.

:30 seconds is nothing compared to the time it takes to connect a rag top in an older model convertable.  Besides, it is "real theater" watching the mechanics of the SC.

i'm not familiar with any hardtop conv dropping... so it might just seem like a long time compared to the auto soft-tops I've used.

Not bad at all. Does it have any anti-break-it tactics? Eg, can you only open/close the roof in Park or at certain speeds, or..?

They say that the car can be moving under 5mph when the roof is open or closed.  I have found that I must be at a dead stop!

Here is a video showing the movements on opening and closing:

Once you get on the site, click the VIDEO button to display the action.

I found a better video showing the movement of the SC 430 retractable roof.

It is "Mary Ann's" Lexus at:

See Carbuff... you discounted the car... thats EASILY under 20 seconds, which is right in line with the other hard/soft tops I've read about/encountered.

Hah.. that was like 19 seconds.. and that is strangely cool to watch. Didnt someone have a synced up video of a bunch of convertibles dropping their tops at once? i am sure it's around here somewhere.

I wonder what kind of pinch/crush protection the motors in the roof have.. Cheesy
