LS460 tire wear
«
on:
June 02, 2008, 05:09:46 PM »
I noted with interest that the Motor Trend long-term LS460 tester needs new rubber at about 20,000 miles. And it apparently had the same OEM Dunlop tires mine has.
It's also worth saying that the REAR tires on their tester are the most worn, so that may be due to burnouts.
I posted on Club Lexus about unusual tire wear on my Dunlops. They aren't wearing fast, just showing feathering on the fronts. After re-aligning to no avail, the Service Manager told me Lexus has stopped using them because of complaints about unusual or rapid treadwear. Great.

Not that aggressive camber from the factory helps.
What are the OE camber specs?

Well, I had kinda hoped for that, but apparently the issue hasn't been elevated to that level yet. Thing is, the tires last long enough, but in my experience the feathering will eventually cause that swish-swish-swish sound as they roll down the street. And of course it will shorten the overall tire life some.
I've about decided to just not rotate and let the fronts wear down halfway or so, then pull the spare out of the trunk, buy one new one and put the current front tire in the trunk as a spare. That'll buy me more time, after which I'll go with Michelins or whatever.

I have the spec sheet from the alignment in my glovebox, but I don't have that available right now. I had a long pow-wow with the Technical Service Mgr. about maybe tweaking the alignment to the outer limits of spec (or maybe even beyond) to help it, but he was afraid it might induce some twitchiness or pull or something. He showed me where there is some faint feathering on the inside tread rows, too, so anything they do in camber will just make it more uneven.
'Appreciate the thought, though. BTW, this does appear to be an issue with this particular Dunlop tire, since the people who got Michelins aren't having the problem.

I just need some QUIET tires... the Yoko's on my GS are killing me. Any suggestions? Performance isn't an issue... I don't drive my car hard enough to notice a difference in 'grip'. I just want smooth and quiet.

I still think it's hard to go wrong with Michelins. And for your use, one of the all-season tires would probably be best. I've had good luck with the Pilot HX MXM4, and Energy MXM4 and I hear the Pilot Sport A/S is good. Continentals are good tires, although I've been disappointed with their wet weather performance, especially hydroplaning. All of them seemed to deliver a quiet ride.
I figure when my Dunlops go, I'll be looking for Michelin replacements.

I had the MMX4 on my Acura. Best tire I'd ever ridden on...but kinda pricey. The Conti Extreme Contact are about 1/2 the price. I may give them a whirl.

ContiExtremeContact aren't too quiet. They're good for the money, but edge more towards performance than refinement.

Are lexus tire whores? It seems like they cant decide on a brand.
The IS-F comes with Bridgestones or Pilot Sport PS2's, unfortunately mine came w/ the Bridgestones. They're okay, but I definitely love my previous pilots (on different car, though!)

Mike,
Out of curiosity.. I know most of the cars on Lexus lots these days wear the 'tire wear' disclaimer (i'm sure you've seen it - "this vehicle may experience treadwear.. blah blah". Did yours have it, or are the tires not in that high-wear class to Lexus? PS - Just curious, this isnt a "you should have read the fine print" exercise.

No, for some reason my LS didn't have the wear sticker ... although I've heard some of them did (or do). The IS did, and if you look at the tire treadwear rating, it's crazy ... like 160 or something. Those OEM tires are sticky, but they wear like art gum erasers.
My current Dunlops aren't necessarily my favorite tires, but after 11,000 miles, they're barely showing wear. The feathering (which admittedly was slight) even appears to have slowed down. I expect to get 25,000 miles or more out of them without any problem, and that's when I'd change them anyway. On 45,000-mile leases, I dump the first set a little more than halfway through so I can get the goodie out of the replacements before giving the car back.
NOW ... the IS-F probably WILL be a tire whore ... especially the rears.

Discussing tire wear, did you see how the Goodyears wore yesterday on NASCAR racers at Indy? They only got ten laps before the rubber flaked to the core.
Of course those are treadless but nevertheless, it gets one wondering about the durability of our OEM tires.
I must say however, that my experience with Michelins on many different cars has always been good. The Bridgestones on my former ES were also quite good.
Do you think that the size of tires (16, 17, 18 etc) has much influence on tire wear or could it be the speed ratings and what they actually means in tire construction that is the determining factor on tire wear?
