Navigation override
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:23:30 PM »

For those who might not know, there is a hardware Nav override unit available for many Lexus products. It's sold by Prestigious Society (I don't name 'em, I just report 'em). I think it's actually manufactured by Coastal E-Technologies (?) in Japan. (I'm not associated with any of these companies!)

It's a plug-n-play wiring harness with a small two-button panel that mounts to the dash or wherever you want it. Push the "Nav" button and you get 5 minutes of full functionality of the Nav while moving. Search POI's, enter destinations, access previous destination, saved destinations, look at your phonebook entries, calendar ... anything you can do while stopped. Press the button again to return to the map display. If you don't press it within 5 minutes, it automatically goes back.

The good thing is that it doesn't "get lost" like the Nav hack for Infinitis does. That is, you can be going 80 mph, keep it on for the full 5 minutes, and the Nav will find its position and resume tracking within a matter of a few seconds. My old M45 would get lost and stay lost until I came to a stop with the 'wire-cut" hack, but the Lexus doesn't.

Press the "TV" button on the little switch pad and you can watch DVD videos on the Nav screen while moving. For the record, this is illegal in most states and I don't recommend doing it.

This unit costs a little over $300 including shipping, but I wouldn't have a Nav that locked me out, and it works beautifully - as I confirmed in a week-long 3500-mile trip recently.

If anyone needs more info, PM me.

Where do you connect it at? Do you have to remove the headunit in the car, or is the navi/connectivity elsewhere?

On some Lexus products there is a key stroke overide that can be done to allow input while moving.  I sent it to Magellan over on FA cause he didnt believe Lexus had one, but its true, and it worked on my Mom's LX470 and RX400h.

You have to pull the head unit to access the gang connector at the rear, but it's not a hard job. Anyone with a socket wrench and a screwdriver can do it in an hour at most.

That's correct, but they pretty much nixed it after '07, and the trick definitely doesn't work on any '08's (I'm told). I had an '07 IS350 and it worked on that, but not on my '08 LS!

Just FYI KPierson (Cf Sponsor) has an over ride for the G35 which bypasses the motion for 30 seconds I'm told.  I'm sure he could enlighten the members as to how this could be modified for use in an M... or he might be willing to produce it if we can convince him there is enough interest (I think there is)

With apologies to Prestigious Society, the override unit in my LS460 is NOT from Coastal E-Tech, and Prestigious Society is not associated with them in any way.

Must have been a brain fart on my part, but the Prestigious Society products are the ones I have experience with and the ones I would recommend.  sSig_yes

Sorry, PS!

I might add that I understand Prestigious is testing a unit right now for Infiniti models and it will have the same feature set as the one in my LS ... 5 minute programming time, DVD override for watching video, quick re-acquisition of positioning, etc. You might wat to contact them for details.

It was one of the first things I tried on my IS-F. Definitely didnt work. There is another navi hack out there for Lexus as well, though; it requires soldering of a few wires. I honestly haven't had the time to delve into it.

I heard back from "Chung" and he said they're looking for local test vehicles and he'd contact me when the units were available for purchase

So ... anything ever come of this?

The Navi lockout is a huge hurdle for me, and I have to say the 2011 M's are looking good otherwise.

Interesting.... I have a 2008 LS460 and a 2006 Infiniti M45. Could use this on both!

Erik - I highly recommend the Prestigious Society override for the LS460. I've had mine for about a year and a half and it turned the Lexus nav into a usable tool.

Big thumbs up!
