One nice difference between Lexus and Infiniti
« on: June 03, 2008, 01:41:26 PM »

There's more than one, of course, but this one sparked some memories.

At Infiniti, the service people are apparently instructed by corporate not to replace anything unless and until they can actually see it malfunction, and even then, they have to be prepared to prove to hdqtrs that the part was actually defective. They would never ever take the customer's word for it that something wasn't working right.

Okay, so I mentioned at my first service that the driver's side door panel kinda squeaked when I rested my elbow against it. (I drive like that a lot. And it didn't make a sound until I pressed on it.) When I picked up the car later that day, it was fixed. No more squeak.

A week or so later, I get a call from the parts dep't. at the dealer telling me I had a part in, and needed to schedule a time to get it installed. What was it? A new door panel. Huh?

I asked the service writer, and found out they had ordered a whole new door panel "just in case". Sorry for the confusion, he told me - we'll send it back to Lexus.

My old Infiniti dealer would NEVER have done that (I have some minor horror stories in that vein). Thing is, I believe Infiniti would gain some really good customer PR/loyalty if they weren't so tight with repair parts. After dealing with BMW, Lexus and others - who actually accept the customer's word that something ain't right - the Infiniti experience was kind of meh.

I agree with you, Infiniti has tight pockets.  I'm not sure how they can justify it in this day and age of customer service being job number 1

I can also vouch the same at Audi (Penske, West covina, CA.)  I was complaining that one of the speakers was rattling when I drove, not with music but from road bumps and stuff...  And when i came to pick up the car, the service tech was telling me I had to schedule another appointment because they were going to replace the entire speaker system... not just 1 speaker (the one rattling) but the entire set...  something about them being voice matched or something!!!

Something we will probably never see at Infiniti too... Well at least with Ghosn behind the wheel...  "LE COST CUTTER!!!"

thats funny.   But they probably make a lot more money, cause those hours get billed to Audi/VW inc.  not you, so they can take their time and replace every single screw and speaker.  Dealer = greedy!

Very good point...  But those parts are being replaced within warranty and not at cost... and the dealer still had to furnish a rental car...  A little A4 i friggen ripped the crap out of, which also had a 7-speed tranny. (Is it only the M's?!?!)

Just as a side note, the speakers they were replacing were the Bang and Olufson premium stereo speakers.  I'm pretty sure they cost even Audi/VW a pretty penny too!

I have gotten tired of "begging" at Infiniti. My warranty is finally over, so there is nothing left to talk to them about really. They would always dismiss any problem I had, even if I could show them the problem. Pretty annoying. They were also good at ordering the wrong parts.

My sunroof still leaks to this day (3 yrs from when I bought the car) when run through a high pressure car wash. Ive taken about 5-6? other cars through this same car wash and none of them allow water to enter the seal around the sunroof.

I also still have the transmission problem which I had reported to them long before the warranty was up (55K miles maybe); and of course they denied having EVER heard of such a thing. Now that my powertrain warranty is gone too, the transmission seems to be getting progressively worse by the day...

Here's my favorite: With only a relatively few miles on my 'o6 M45, I noticed some cracks (yes, CRACKS!) in my right front alloy wheel. This was obviously a defect ... the wheel had not been damaged in any way. So I whipped it right up to the Infiniti dealer.

I expected them to say something like, "Holy crap, let's get that off there and get you a new wheel right away!", but instead, they subjected it to examination by a whole team of people. I looked out into the service area at one point and there were like 7 people all looking it over.

After about an hour, I went back to the service advisor and asked what's going on. He told me they wanted some regional reps to look at it before they replaced it.  Shocked

So I politely informed him that it was a huge safety issue, and he could tell the regional reps that they could replace that defective wheel pronto, or I was going to sue them into oblivion. He went out and talked to the Service Manager and I got the wheel replaced pronto.

Now get this: When I was back weeks later for an oil change, he told me they (the dealer) almost had to eat the cost of that wheel ($900) because they replaced it without approval! Are you believing that?

Here's a couple shots of the cracks, so you know what I'm talking about -

Mike the arrows weren't necessary... thats pretty blatant!  Thats really crazy... anyone else heard of wheels cracking like that?  Cracked alloy... that doesn't even seem possible unless you jumped a curb or something

That seems more like a crack from varying temperatures...  Possibly running hard and the brakes warming up the rim or hot sun or anything for that matter...  And then cold water hitting it... Maybe not that hot enough though... just a thought.   Huh?

good point... if you were to really really heat them up and then wash your car?  I don't know though... still seems like this should be accounted for in the engineering.
