Well ... ALL the Nav's I've had went from day screen to night screen, so that's not unique to Lexus at all. And BTW, the Lexus screen isn't tan ... it's white.
Mike

I'll defer to you on the white vs. tan.  I was thinking tan/black (or dark blue whatever it is). My dad's honda truck is very similar (probably just like your acura).  My wife's JEEP however... one color, tan... all the time... it does change in brightness when the headlights are on... but I would LOVE if it had a night vision feature like the others do.    So the Infiniti nav changes background color too?  I'm considering Nav next time around... still am undecided on that front, but now there's aftermarket nav hack (kptech) Smiley and I like the gadgets!

But on the M, 'Destination Last State' or 'Destination Last City' prevent the need to start entirely from scratch, no?

Yes, I think you're right about that ... been awhile and I forgot that trick. I do seem to recall there were generally more steps to follow for a given task in the M than in the Acuras.

And of course, there's that pesky thing about having to have the exact name of a street or you get a "tilt" in the Infiniti. Acura requires only the core street name, and it either nails it or gives you options to choose from. That way, if you don't know if it's Jones Street or Jones Boulevard, you just say "Jones".

Maybe it was partly my ignorance ( Wink ), but I've heard other owners of both brands agree with me that the Acura system is just easier to use.

Agreed! It was that way on our TSX (Euro Accord) in the UK. I loved that it gave you choices if it didn't know. The M is definitely inferior in that aspect.

Yes sir. When the lights are on, the background goes dark (practically black) and the streets are illuminated.  In the day the background is light (a light tan) and the streets are outlined.  Freeways are in red.

On the M there is also an option to turn the display into night mode without the lights being turned on, and what I just found out recently by dumb luck is that if you hold that button down, the screen turns off completely which is nice at night driving on long trips where there aren't as many street lights.

I'll post pics if anyone is interested.

I'm going to jump in here, because I owned an 06 RL before getting my current GS.  (Mike has heard the tale of woe from Acura)

I didn't even consider the Acura until a friend of mine got one.  I had narrowed my selections down to a used 04 BMW 545 w/ 17k on the ODO for $42K. (this was back in 06 when I was shopping)... an IS 250 (which was going for $41K at the time, and Lexus wasn't dealing, being that it was a first year model) and a GS which was closer to $50K with the options I wanted (Nav/ML..etc)

The Acura dealer was right next to Infinity, so while I drove the M35, I checked out the RL.  I couldn't believe how much car I got for $41.5K.  It had everything I wanted, plus a few things I didn't even have on the list...like AWD and adaptive headlights. I thought the Bose system was incredible! (Especially with a DVD-A in) The Nav and Voice recognition was hands down the BEST I've tested.  Although I probably use it <1% of the time I drive.  I will admit that I wasn't thrilled with the exterior appearance, but I loved the interior. So I ended up with an RL... mostly because I felt like it was the best car for the money. Even though it didn't particularly stir my soul.  In fact, my wife asked me if I liked the car, and my exact reply was, "It's a great car... but doesn't really have a SOUL."  I have since learned that you should never spend that money on a car that doesn't make you smile every time you walk into the garage.

With that said, I really liked the car for it's handling, quiet ride (with ANC technology through the Bose) and that amazing sound system.  Then the problems started.  I checked the oil with 5k mi on the ODO and the dipstick was DRY. BONE DRY.  I changed it myself, and found it over 2qts low.  I had no spots on the floor, no smell or oil burning or 'blue smoke'... so I figured maybe it wasn't filled right from the factory.  5K miles later... another 1.3qts low (bottom of the dipstick).  Put in a Qt and brought it to Acura.  They did an Oil Consumption Test on it, and sure enough it burned another 1.3qts at the 5k mi mark.  Now keep in mind, the little computer doesn't even come on to tell you to change it until 7500mi. So if it wasn't for me checking it, I would have had to wait for the dummy light to come on saying LOW OIL PRESSURE. My service manager said, he'd never heard of an RL burning oil. My friend said their RL has never burned a drop.  And everyone in AcuraZine pretty much said, "Our cars don't burn oil".   But... the service dept couldn't get Acura Tech Service to approve them pulling apart my engine to see what was wrong with mine.  The quoted their Tech Manual which said, up to 1qt every 1000 mi's was considered within operating standards.  That's right... 1qt every 1000 mi.  I complained to Acura Customer Service... they quoted the tech manual.  So in order to avoid getting an ulcer, I started looking for a used GS with similar features and mileage. Found my current car...then called my Acura Service Dept and told the manager, "Hey Dave... I figured out how to fix my oil consumption issue".  He somewhat excitedly said, "Really?? How?"  I said, "I traded the F*%&# thing in on a Lexus!!"  He wasn't amused. Oh well.  I'm sure Honda Motor Co's stock price didn't drop because they lost me as a customer. But it sure felt good!

Anyway, I've had issues with my GS (brakes, and faulty PCV valve...creaks and squeeks)  But so far, Lexus has taken care of me.  And I'm sticking with them!

I'll post about the GS problems in it's own thread.

There...that's my RL experience! I miss the RL sometimes.  I miss the Voice Recognition. I miss the engine note. I miss the AWD.  I don't miss the gas milage (averaged 19mpg...and my GS averages 26-28).  I don't miss the dismal 5sp transmission with it's 'stump puller' 1st and 2nd gears.. and it's flat spot in 3rd.

Nice little write up here.. you seem to think similarly to me. Smiley
(Except you didnt like the 2nd gen GS!)

For what it's worth, at this point in time, I am loathing the Lexus IS's navi system. I miss the infiniti's desperately. I'll cope. Smiley

I would miss Acura's Navi more if I used it more often.  In looking at cars and their 'options'... I would have to say a a good stereo system is the best investment. In that regard, the ML system was worth the trade.

Yeah, I saw that. In spite of your unfortunate experience, I still think it's a highly under-appreciated car ... at least until the '09 made its appearance. That snout that now adorns all Acuras is a mess.

The 3.7-liter engine is a response to all the criticism that the RL was underpowered, but I agree the gas mileage angle isn't beneficial to the cause. It's odd, too, when others are running engines with more output that have far better mileage. Honda - what happened?

Yeah.. not sure what acura were thinking when they pulled the whole 3.7L thing. Certainly not a whole lot. Is the RL 5 or 6 speed AT?
