Tom's racing - Toms Japan Linear Throttle Control System
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:39:28 PM »

Anyone familiar w/ Tom's Racing parts?

I am looking into the following:

http://www.l-tunedparts.com/product/?id=2925

"Toms Japan Linear Throttle Control System"

Quote
The new Toms Linear Throttle Control System is designed to help your vehicle achive much crisper and  direct throttle response. As is common in many electronically controlled throttle systems, you don't always get the best throttle responce from the vehicle. The Toms control unit fixes that.

This unit gives you the option of 4 settings. Economy, Sport 1, Sport 2, and Sport 3

You can taylor what kind of throttle responce you like based on your driving stylke. Installation is plug and play, and the system will return to economy mode automatically when the car is turnes off.

Basically, the M had pretty aggressive throttle response (or so I thought); and liked. The IS-F.. not so much. It takes a lot of coaxing (eg, near WOT) to make it decide you really want to get up and go. I'm thinking the above device is to counter that and make the throttle more responsive. I'm not sure how it does it, i'm guessing it just lies about the throttle position to the engine/tranny? The description of it is pretty vague and non-technical.

At any rate - anyone know about this device, or Tom's in general?

PS - Mike, it works on the LS460. I know you want one! Wink

I'll identify major issue #1 you'll have with this.

'Sport' mode shuts off every time as well, so it wouldnt be anything new. Just another button to press when I need it.

Still $500 for TCS adjustment.  That's ridiculous.  Don't be such a wuss and push the pedal down. Cheesy

And we've already established you don't like having to push buttons or turn knobs.

Yes, and this results in the car jumping from 8th to 2nd-3rd and lunging forward. Sure, it's fun, but it gets a bit old. A more aggressive/linear throttle tip in would be nice.

Well when you have a million gears, you need to switch them more often to justify them. Smiley  Sounds like you have more of an issue with the transmission logic then necessarily the DBW tuning.

$500 for a TPS box is still pretty ridiculous.

Dang 5 bills for a throttle system?

Isn't that like the ECU driver memory system on the M which kinda figures out your driving style and tailors the throttle and stuff to match?  I would assume your IS would have already have something like that no?  Maybe a little research is in order... brb...

I think it is a learning ECU, it's just noticeably more "tame" than i'd like it to be. Infiniti tends to get reviews for overly aggressive throttle response - which is what i'm used to (and want); whereas lexus is much more 'subdued'.

So if its learning...  Why don't you reset it, and then mash the pedal everywhere you go for the next 2 weeks, then it'll learn you have a heavy foot!!!  So now even if you drive conservatively, the tip-in will still be rather agressive...

I know its sarcastic, but hey it might actually work right?!?!

Tom's is a big aftermarket parts company for Toyota. Like Roush is for Mustang...Alpina for BMW...Ruf for Porsche...etc. Tom's is reputable but I don't know about their TCS system.
