My dealer was willing to take a whopping $500 off the MSRP of an M37 w/Premium. That made it just under $50k.

This setup has all the stuff I want - nav, heated/cooled seats and heated steering wheel, xenons, upgraded audio w/sat and hard drive, voice recognition and bluetooth, etc. And after two drives, I'm pretty sure the V6 is entirely adequate ... sure, I'd like the V8, but for 8 grand more? Hmmm ... I think maybe not.

Of course, they aren't willing to give me enough for the Lexus, so it might well not fly. But I'm not through yet!

I'm with you, I haven't driven it, but I've driven the G37 with VVEL vs my G35 and I have the VQHR in the M35 with over 300hp, I think the M37 is good enough for me, especially with gas prices creeping up again.

Gas prices aren't a factor for me, since I don't fall for the belief V8's automatically get worse mileage than 6's. I've shown on here before that my 380 hp LS460 gets over 30 mpg on the road, and that 's better than many cars with smaller engines get. I expect the M56 to get about the same mileage as the M37.

The killer is the $8,000 difference in price for the V8 ... same equipment, same everything, the M56 is 8 grand more than the M37. That's hard to justify, especially with the M37 being pretty darn spunky.

^^^I don't agree at all.  If it's really about 8K, I think it's about right really.  How much more was the M45 compared to the M35?  The difference was smaller (340 vs 290 hp?).

I think I read somewhere that the difference between a 535 vs 550 and the E-350 vs E550, is always less than 10K and about 8k.

Mike,
So far, Infinitis havent had any success in fuel economy department
Even though you pretty close in you statement about similarity in MPG for V8 and V6, still It's gonna be pretty bad for both Ms
My guess is V8 will barely squize 22-23 and V6 25 tops

Doesn't the M have an "eco pedal" now..?  Thats probably why there is a big difference in sport mode.

Completely agree that INfiniti hasn't exactly led the charge for good mileage. The big difference in the 2011, though, is the 7-spd tranny. With my '06 M45 and its 5-spd, I got 24 or so on the highway. Even with the extra displacement (remember the new V8 is direct injection), the extra cogs and higher-geared 7th should yield an improvement over the old car. The V6 doesn't have DI, but it does benefit from the 7-spd.

I think EPA gives the V8 1 mpg less than the V6, but that's just a function of the testing regimen. I'll say this - the car is a lot more relaxed at higher speeds than my M45 was!

I have the 7spd transmission, the 7th gear isn't low enough to really matter.  I think they geared it for acceleration, and I still am not getting spectacular mpg on the highway.

Doesn't the M have an "eco pedal" now..?  Thats probably why there is a big difference in sport mode.

The M has a selector knob on the console that allows you to choose between ECO, Normal and Sport. These settings adjust the throttle sensitivity and transmission shift points.

The car I drove yesterday was set on ECO when I pulled out of the parking lot, and I thought I was going to have to get out and push it. Mushy pedal doesn't do it justice. I clicked it over to Sport and it was cured. This is the one example I've seen where the control knob actually DOES something.

I'll put it this way - on Normal, the M37 feels about like the old M35. Switch it to Sport and it instantly becomes more nimble and responsive, and you feel those additional ponies.

I think you meant "high" instead of low.

I don't know, but I recall that my M45 was turning way too many rpm's at highway speeds. Don't remember exactly, but it seems like it was taching over 3,000 rpm at 75 in top gear. My LS460 does about 1850-1900 at 80 mph.

I wish I had noticed the rpm's yesterday, since I had a chance to get the car on the freeway, but I didn't. Some of the effect was because the car is so quiet, but it sure didn't seem to be churning like my old M45 was!

higher gear, lower gear ratio... either way you want to read it.  We've done the numbers here before, no need to rehash it, but the M35 7AT is not doing under 2k at 80 mph.  That I know for sure.

So I was at the dealer a couple of days back. They had an M37S in one of the lighter (?) grays in the showroom. I looked. And looked. And looked.

Guess what? Blah.

I went outside and saw one in white. That changed everything. I am not sure I recall ever liking a white sedan, but this added a whole new dimension to the car. Usually white makes a bulbous car even more so, but the curves really worked here. No white elephant this one.

I need to see a few more colors!

Something I learned a long time ago was never to form my opinion on how a car looks while it sits in a dealer showroom.  The ambiance there is created to display a car in its "best light."  The way to really see how a car looks is to see it outside on the street or alone in a parking lot.

My friend's dark color M56 has a terrific visual presence parked outside in the sunlight.  Its lines give the impression of the M champing at the bit  to fly down the road.  The look of the M56 is altogether more visually pleasing to me then my former M45.

I really formed my opinion of the M56's exterior design when a white color M56 passed me yesterday.  It fairly shimmered as it sped by.  I followed it for a few miles and noticed an improvement in the rear lights.  They are shaped better and fit the space on the exterior of the car better then those of my M did.

The color of my present car is Sarfire Pearl.  This is a lustrous deep-sheen white.  The white exterior on the M56 that passed me appeared to be every bit as rich and beautiful.

I have only driven the M56 a short distance during my visit to the dealer.  But, the verve of its power really impressed me.  My V8 is powerful but pales in comparison to that of the M56.

As I previously mentioned to my friend, if I was not as satisfied with my SC as I am, the M56 would be sitting in my garage this very moment.

I agree. But the two of the new M's I had seen in the wild didn't impress me much either. The white one outside of the dealership did.

white is a good color on the car, definitely.  I've seen the black, and I just wasn't feeling it.  Not like the silver and the white.
