370Z
«

We've seen details of the forthcoming Nissan 350Z replacement, dubbed the 370Z on account of a bump in displacement to 3.7 liters for its next-gen VQ V6 engine, and we also know that it will debut this November at the L.A. Auto Show. Nissan even revealed its own version of a quirky teaser shot showing the car's profile. A recent presentation held somewhere on this floating orb we call Earth, however, included a slide that pretty much removes the mystery surround the rear-wheel-drive coupe's new looks. Fortunately for us, someone at the presentation forgot to confiscate everyone's camera phone. So what we see is a new 370Z that very much retains the basic shape of the current car, but features softened creases, fenders flaired even more, a kinky C-pillar and a pair of headlights with an odd 'L' shape that first debuted on the 2009 Maxima. Along with the new shape, the new engine should offer buyers around 330 horsepower, as we doubt Nissan will want to make the less expensive 370Z more powerful than the more expensive 330-hp Infiniti G37.

The highly-successful Nissan 350Z is getting long in the tooth, and rumors about its replacement have been circulating for some time. Expected to arrive in sometime in 2009 as a 2010 model, the new 370Z, codenamed Z34, will be smaller, lighter, and more agile than the current model.
Changes begin with the shortened wheelbase and reduced overall length. The wheelbase will be shrunk by about four inches to just over 100 inches, with length dropping by some five inches to around 164 or so. Sources indicate the wheelbase was shortened by removing the the strut tower brace that dominated the rear cargo area and by shrinking room behind the seats.
These dimensions will make the 370Z roughly the same size as a Porsche Cayman or BMW M Coupe. Styling will be more aggressive, with heavily flared fenders, rocker panels and new fascia with updated lighting. The cabin will likely feature better materials and improved ergonomics.
On the engine side, the extra 0.2-liters of displacement are going to translate into a substantial power boost on the order of at least 45 horsepower, giving the 370Z at least the 330 horses under the hood that the Infiniti G37 coupe has, possibly more. Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed automatic.

The all-new Nissan 370Z is still a good six months away from an official reveal, but thanks to our illustration and now a shot of the car from a presentation, we shouldn't be too surprised when the car finally takes its place on the Nissan stand. As previously speculated, the newest Z will receive a headlight treatment similar to the design seen on the 2009 Maxima.
Overall, the 370Z — which is being developed under the code name C53D — appears to keep the same general shape as the current 350Z. However, the front headlights — which will reportedly use LEDs — are much more dramatic than the current car's and can be clearly seen in our illustration and the leaked image. The rear also seems to be a bit stubbier, with a sharper crease along the trailing edge of the hatch.
The 370Z is expected to use the same VQ37VHR powerplant found in the Infiniti G37 — a V6 displacing 3.7L — delivering at least 330 horsepower.
In December of 2006, Nissan product planning VP Larry Dominique said the next-generation Z would "have considerably more performance than the current model and give a visual stimulus beyond today’s Z." He said it would continue to deliver on the promise of being attainable to a wide range of people.
Expect to see the all-new Z at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

370Z moves upscale!

When the 2010 Nissan 370Z finally bows later this year or early in 2009, it will be skewed a little closer to the GT-R than the outgoing 350Z. Not only will this make the all-new car a more performance-minded vehicle, but it will also clear the way for a new entry-level Nissan-badged sports car.
While the overall shape of the 350Z will remain, the 370Z will essentially be an entirely new vehicle. The most obvious change will be the bump in displacement from 3.5L to 3.7L — a change that should result in at least 330 horsepower.
But under the surface, the 370Z will actually be riding on an all-new platform. Nissan will be swapping the 350Z's FM platform to a new E global platform that already underpins the majority of the Infiniti range.
To further bump the 370Z upscale, it's quite possible that Nissan engineers will equip the car with the same dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission found in the GT-R, according to Car and Driver.
These changes should clear the way for an entry-level sports car, but the new car might not be exactly what enthusiasts are looking for. While previous rumors had the car pegged as a rear-wheel drive 240SX replacement, Nissan officials have revealed to Car and Driver that they are actually eying a front-wheel drive model. Larry Dominique, Nissan North America vice president in charge of product planning and strategy, says the new model will do battle with the likes of the Mazda MX-5, Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice, but we have a hard time believing a front-driver will be able to keep up with those rear-drive vehicles.

While big brother GT-R takes on the Porsche 911s and the BMW M3s, little brother 2010 370Z is on its way to take on the Audi TTs, BMW 1-Seires and the Mitsubishi Evos. A sneak peek was recently seen at the Nissan 360 press event.
According to sources of CARandDRIVER (as revealed in the June 2008 issue), the platform of the next-generation Nissan Z will be lighter and wider. Of course we’ve already heard numerous times before that the G37’s 3.7 liter V6, 330-hp will find its way under the hood and the badge will be changed to the 370Z.
What’s new is that the 2010 Nissan 370Z may get a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission from big-brother GT-R.
We’ll find out soon enough when the next-generation Nissan Z makes its debut at the LA Auto Show later this year. Sales are expected to begin early 2009.

Is nissan trying to run infiniti out of business?
In fact, are they trying to run themselves out of business? Aren't all the GT-R's already pre-ordered? It seems like they should up production on those rather than dealing with what I would suspect are somewhat less impressive margins that they'd get from the 370?
370Z sounds weird too.

E Global Platform? What? First i've heard of this? Not that that's saying much.. but I am pretty sure the new FX ('09) and the 08 G, etc, all run on the FM platform. What's this E business?
Links regarding FM platform on the FX, and mentions of the G37, etc:

I've not heard of the E platform either, it least not by that name, the new silvia (see thread) is going to be based on a shorter frame called the FR. All I can say is details keep slowly emerging, we should have the whole story very soon!
This is further explanation from CARandDRIVER:
Quote
While the original Z rode on Nissan’s FM (for front midship) platform, the 2010 370Z rides on the new E platform that encompasses former FM vehicles as well as some international vehicles on the FR-L architecture, which denotes “Front-engine, Rear-drive, and Large”—all part of Nissan’s platform consolidation efforts. The 370Z will share the E platform with much of the Infiniti lineup including the FX, EX, M, and G coupe and sedan.

I think they mean
"all part of Nissan’s platform cost-cutting efforts"

I'm gonna go ahead and say it. This is not an attractive car. Bulbous in the wrong places, the headlights are avant garde but in a bad way. Aggressive? uh no. I'd rather have the Infiniti G which is way way better looking.

I'm waiting for the final version to come out before I pass judgement. I LOVED the 2nd gen G coupe concept, and was very disappointed by the production model. On the other hand, I've seen concepts I haven't dug, where the production model has been much, much better.

I'm not really enjoying most of these concepts and photos. The headlights just aren't right. Of the photos above I think I like this one the most.
And I've never heard of this E-global platform term. I'm gessing it may be a Nissan term. As far as I know the most common current Infiniti platform is the FM. The GTR is a variation of this being a "premium midship" or PM platform.

Looks like a split between mitsubishi eclipse (previous generation) front and back and RX8 hood and sides.. but doesnt look 'bad', just... very different. Im sure production will be toned down.

nah thats production... just wrapped in vinyl and plastic. It will be revealed at L.A. auto show, and thats only a month or two away. I don't think it will look that much different than the outgoing model.
I think it looks essentially like this under the plastic:
