2010 BMW X1

MUNICH, Germany — BMW has confirmed that the new X1, its smallest crossover yet, will be assembled at the sprawling Leipzig plant in Germany.
In a statement Friday, the company said, "The exact time point of production start and the market launch of the X1 will be revealed at a later date."
European suppliers told Inside Line the X1 is scheduled to begin production in Leipzig in fall 2009. The X1 will share its basic underpinnings, including powertrains, with the 1 Series compacts, which are also assembled at Leipzig.
Inside Line has learned that a sister model, to be dubbed the X4, is also being readied for launch in spring 2010. While it may share some major mechanicals with the X1, its styling will be closer to that of the new X6, with a coupelike four-door body.
While the X1 will be aimed at the same buyers Audi wants to cultivate with its upcoming Q3, the X4 may attempt to carve out a new niche in the ever-expanding and still fragmenting premium-crossover market, both in Europe and North America.

I think the EX is a better car.

I'll wait to see it without the body armor, but I'm not liking the original shots here.

Agreed and I'm getting sick of mini SUV's. I'd rather see sporty hatchbacks and wagons than small, tall car-based vehicles with horrible suspensions and no off-road abilities being sold as "crossovers."

I agree! Really...is there any need for an SUV smaller and not as attractive as even the X3? I know, I know...they will put the twin turbo six in the Xdrive 135i which will be the perfect excuse for those to purchase such a pointless vehicle. It will be butt ugly and will be able only to carry a 12 pack of Corona, but...BUT, it will be a BMW and go like stink.
For the record...I don't get the point of the EX either. Yes, this coming from an FX owner

The small SUV seems suited to the European market to me. When I was in Brussels a few weeks ago I noticed that half the cars on the road are very high centered. Most of these small cars seem like mini minivans.

BMW released more than 40 pics of the upcoming X1.
Looks a bit too Bangled to me. Also the headlights looks huge compared to the car.
Love how the rear lights on the trunk don't match the design of the tail lights, as on the X5, others. It's like part of BMW character I guess, it must feel like it came from the parts bin of another car...It wasn't a mistake, it was a design choice, perpetuated forever...You can bet it's going to be like that in 2050...They call it character.

2009 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: 2011 BMW X1
Date posted: 07-02-2009
MUNICH, Germany — BMW has finally ended its striptease for the X1, releasing official images and details of the new compact crossover ahead of its formal launch in September at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. The BMW X1, however, won't make the Atlantic crossing until calendar year 2011.
Joining a rapidly expanding lineup of CUVs that includes the X3, X5 and X6, the new X1 goes on sale this fall in Europe. It will compete with such entries as the Volkswagen Tiguan and the upcoming Audi Q3. Another potential competitor is the upcoming 2011 BMW 335i GT hatchback.
The X1 will be offered in Europe in both rear-wheel-drive (sDrive) and all-wheel-drive (xDrive) configurations, with a choice of one gasoline and three diesel engines, as well as six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The most frugal diesel variant, fitted with auto stop-start, will deliver up to 45 mpg on the European test cycle, BMW says.
U.K. pricing already has been released, and British buyers can expect a range from $37,000-$40,750.
BMW has also released running footage of the X1 crossover, and you can watch it in the video below

The car looks ugly to me. Even smaller than the X3, what's the point? And I though the EX35 was small.
Maybe it's just a lowered X3 then? But then, what's the problem with the 335 wagon? There was also some talk about a 335 GT (hatch) right?
Talk about over saturating an almost nonexistent niche: good luck against the upcoming Q3, etc.
Question of the day: how many spin-offs can BMW generate from the 3 series platform? 5, 7...10? Can't wait for the 3 series little pickup truck.
