Yeah they probably are... They prefer ugly!!! hahahah
But seriously, considering its at a show, kinda like what Scion did when they first debuted their marquee is that they're trying to show what can be done and how extreme it can be. I don't think the designer really wanted the car to look like that, but they wanted to show how extreme the modding for that car could be done. I know Mazda is established but maybe thats a growing trend out there and they want to show that by comissioning Kesselman to do an extreme mod...

i think the "3 slices" is the direction Mazda syling is heading towards. these are some of their concept vehicles... not the similarities in the front valance:
