My trip to the NC Auto Show
« on: February 07, 2009, 01:03:59 AM »

Had fun.  Nothing too exciting though.  Some commentary: My overall favorite was the A6... who would have guessed, but honestly I could see that as my next vehicle.  Honorable mentions to the VW Passat CC, Jaguar XF-S, C63 AMG, and Toyota Venza.. those were interesting.  I think I had the most fun playing around in the mini-vans... kids these days have got it made!

Note: I didn't take pictures of any hondas, (sorry Joe), and Lexus, GM, and Ford pulled out of the show last minute.  Interestingly, mercury and Lincoln WERE present.  See individual notes below.

RL was revised to include the ugly grille... I didn't bother to snag a pic.

Took a few of the TL... yeah its pretty bad in person.  That grille is just too much.  The other thing that was odd was the toggle on the center stack... it doesn't spin, it moves in every direction.  See pic below.

Had to throw this in there bc of lawman... this thing is TINY.  Seriously, a Cseries seemed bigger inside.  The ML isn't even as big as the R... You gotta go all the way up to the GL to get bigger, and the one at the show was 85k

This is called a Toyota Yaris Onyx... not bad looking for what it is.

G37X-S note front lip spoiler and black grille options... pretty sweet.  The wheels don't look as bad in person... in fact I barely even noticed them.

Supercharged XF-S.... good looking and comfy car, thought I took more pics of it.  Somewhere around 65k though..

Do they keep all the doors locked or can people get in the cars?  Interesting how a lot of cars they had on pedestals at Philly are just sitting out at your show.  At Philly, anything they don't want you in, is roped off for the most part, and anything on the floor like that you can sit in.  You definitely have a smaller show though, they don't spend much on displays or anything there.

I didn't like the G37 sedan wheels.  Not as bad, but not great either.  I didn't bother to take photos of it because it wasn't very exciting. Smiley  What I found interesting was the convertible was absent in the Infiniti area where I was.  Thought they'd have it there.  Also no QX and on a single M.  They had several EX's, FX's and G37 sedans and coupes, but those are the really big sellers and the M is the oldest of the lot, so they won't push it again until the new model.

A6 was nice.  I still prefer the A5.  My girlfriend loved the A5 but I refuse to consider one until the S5 is back to a FI engine at the least.  Even then, doubt I'd trade my STI in for one, that car is just way too enjoyable to drive and the hatch is super practical. Smiley

The only things you couldn't get in were the Rolls Phantom and Droptop, and some classic cars that had taken the place of GM & Ford products (I assume).  No, no large displays, not hot chicks, just salesmen there to answer questions if necessary.

I completely forgot about the convertible, shoulda asked.  There was a QX (interestingly getting a lot of attention for something so old and going away) and 2 M's 35 & 45.  1 EX (blah) 1 FX (orange AAAAH!) 2 G37 sedans, one coupe.  I hadn't seen the black grille or front bumper lip in person, so I thought I'd snag a pic.  I like them.  The rims I photo'd because they weren't as in your face as they come off in the press pictures taken from an inch off the ground.

I liked the A5 S-line that was present, but man was it small... no back seat to speak of.  And the bland grey colored one they brought was not as appealing as a black would have been I think.  The STi was definitely larger.

The A6 was really nice... priced one out as I would buy last night... 55k but am I really improving over my current vehicle?  Not substantially.  Slightly larger outside, not really inside.  Lose a few hp, gain a lot of tq.  Get a newer car and larger car payment.  Does look nice, but better than the G... its subjective.  Not sure I'll go that route, not anytime soon anyway.

Why do people always bring up back seat space in a 2 door coupe? Smiley  If you care about that, get a sedan.  Coupes are for 2 people, maybe a small child or person at best crammed in the back out of necessity and not to carry anything more than you could take in carry-on.

I guess my query would be... why have a backseat if its unusable.

Insurance.  They don't care how bad the backseats are, they just care that they're there.  In the case of my G35, I would've ripped the backseats out in time and redone the rear  for a flat floor given the time and money to do it properly.  95% of the use my backseats got was folded down flat to carry a suitcase that wouldn't fit in my trunk because of my rear STB.

I don't think I've mentioned this here, but there is ANOTHER auto show THIS weekend... and per the radio, this one will have a G37 convertible, camaro, and aston martin.  So maybe it will be a little more lively... guess we'll see.  I'll probably go Fri a.m. (again!)
