ROFLOL.  I don't know what a picture of the Taurus rental going down the hole proves, but it certainly doesn't have the ground clearance to do half of what's on that video.  It would get stuck on top of that little elevation easily, if not float in that mud hole.

Also the point on that video (I think it was setup by the manufacturer) is to show what the car can do unscratched, like normal driving.  Try that with the flex or the taurus.

I'm not sure where you're trying get to, didn't hear about Range Rovers lacking in anything compared to previous gen.  Stock for stock (including tires), I think only the Jeeps can come close, nothing else can (certainly not one Ford FX or whatever).

So RH are you saying only some jeeps come close to the Range Rover in off roading?
What about your SUV?  The FJ Cruiser and such.   Wink

At this point I don't even know what I'm saying...Yes, the FJ cruiser may be great, the Sequoia is just a raised big van with a ship engine in it...so no real off-road there I guess, but compared to a Suburban or a Denali it's great but that's how far it goes.

I just love Range Rovers, and Land Rovers in general and I don't think Turbo was fair at all.  Maybe I went I bit too defensive, but that's love.

I think the term is fanboy, lol and yeah they are good, but they don't offroad as well when they are in the shop for repairs haha.  Dollar for dollar nothing beats a jeep, of course H1 takes the cake but they are expensive as hell and so is the diesel fuel burning in them.

I know a guy with an old FJ and its pretty versatile, id love an international scout myself.  But I'm not going to say the range rover or land rover isn't capable, I haven't seen anyone do anything real daring in one though.

I think the Cayenne and the Touareg rate decently for off roading (stock-ish) as well due to the air suspension and good AWD system...?

hahahahahahahahaha,
That video is hilarious.  No offense, but I could get a ford flex, no a ford Taurus through everything that they went through and more.  Oh wait... I actually have done that.

Also the advice given about going through mud/water is TOTALLY wrong.  Especially when you have silly street tires on clay.

The way around the ruts is to drive on them, not in them.
If the range had the option of 2wd, it could do that whole track in it.  Yes, you might not get it first try every time but when it comes to mud and clay, its all about traction and inertia.  Your right in that its designed to make people who have never been off road go WOW, I just made it through a mud puddle in the woods.  I was more making fun of the fact that they were touting how awesome it was that a Range can make it through that simple terrain.  It is capable of so much more.  I was only partially questioning its abilities, but since you brought it up.  It doesn't even look like it comes with locking diffs anymore!?  From what I can tell from the website it only comes with a center locking diff and advanced traction control.  Hill decent is a joke, really people?  You can't drive down a hill??  You also notice Clarkson says the range can go back up the hill but doesn't show it.  There is no way that or any suv could get up that hill given how wet and sloppy it was.  You also notice how they didn't bring the all mighty Range past where the x5 and Trooper got stuck.  The thing is that no matter what vehicle or equipment, traction is king so tires have more to do with it than anything else.  If you put Mud Terrains on the x5 it would do circles around the Range and JGC in that video.  The only place you really need low range (Clarkson's reason for the range being better off road) is on rocks when traction is plentiful and precision driving decisions are more important.  Again, I'm not saying the Range isn't capable, but despite what their heritage might suggest its no better than any other not totally pussified suv.  Range Rover now is a luxury brand, not an off-road brand.  The only thing that might make a Range more capable off road than others currently on the market is the adjustable ride height.  Though what that means in a luxury truck is that the truck can be lowered like a car for normal driving, and raised to only slightly above average when off road.  Not, it drives like a truck and push a button to make it a crazy capable off-road vehicle that owners with big heads think they are.

Speaking of expensive off roaders... do you know how much the new Wrangler is!?  I was a the auto show and there was one optioned out it was heading to 40k!?  That is with a lift, bumpers, Winch etc but still!?  A Wrangler!???

I agree with most of what you said, except this.

People who don't have/never had a mud toy to really test their skills won't be able to really appreciate what this car can do...if it were not for the electronics in it.  You say the auto hill descent control is useless, I say it's not.  If you don't know what to do on that hill and go a bit too speedy (so as not to loose momentum and get caught in the mud) may lock the tires if you need to brake and simply slide down the slope with no control, the car may even turn sideways and there's nothing you can do to avoid it from topple over.  Range Rover's hill descent control allows the car go steady and straight with NO steering input, as shown on the video.

Oh, and I do believe it can go up on that hill, the car was designed for the British country side, if there's one thing it can do is wet and muddy grassy hills.

Also the Range Rover does come with locking differentials, see the pictures below (even the Sequoia has them nowadays, unlike its competitors).  And also a camera (like the FX around view camera) only directed to each tire, so you don't need to check if you actually lost traction or just need more power...No need to hang off the car with the door open or (horror!) step in the mud with your italian shoes.  If THAT thing get stuck just call the tow truck and enjoy a movie while waiting... Cheesy

It's a fantastic car.

Of course you can buy a 2k Bronco, raise it and fit 40in tires and the thing will go circles around this thing.  But that's just a toy.  You're not going from the city to the woods in a bronco with the family.  If you know what you're going to get, you can fit the proper tires in your toy and have fun.  But a real SUV is not about that, is to get you and your family to the cabin, even if it rains and it gets mud everywhere on the way back.  It's not a toy you tow, or a car you don't mind having a few extra dents every time you go to by supplies.  Different strokes for different folks.

Fantastic car?  I wouldn't go that far.  Yes it has some advanced gimmicks *features*, but you still have to get over the hyper inflated price, HORRIBLE resale value, horrible reliability and having to live with the fact that everyone else thinks your a pompous a hole.  But i can see the allure Wink

Btw, The only way to get the rear locker is to get the S/C'd version where it is standard.

Hill decent control would be useful going down an icy hill.  I'll give you that, but apart from that its just like automated parking.  Why learn how to park or drive down a hill when you can get a computer to do it for you?  And all those fancy screens are designed for parallel parking, not off-roading.  If they were for off-roading they would be pointed at the wheels UNDER the car that is inevitably scraping on something due to the lack of ground clearance.
