I have not idea what I did...hehehe tried shooting in TV, M, P, depth of field (liked this one), used a zoom lens and the 24-70.. tried to mess with the white balance (dont' understand this yet... circle with dot in middle, circle no dot, just dot, etc...)

comments are welcome...

I like some of the shots..... Grin

The yellow tones are certainly a distraction.  Were you riding in hazardous location, with like, mustard gas in the air?? LOL

I'd rather leave the white balance on auto, shoot raw, and see what happens with it in Photoshop later.

As far as I know, white balance is irrelevant when shooting raw. You need to adjust for it post shot.

I think you're right, but the camera still tags the WB set.  When you choose "as shot" in the computer, it will return to the camera choice, you don't have to guess what you were thinking when you took the shot (did I use a grey card here, or did I use a fluorescent preset, etc.).

Ohmster is correct, the RAW files have no artificial adjustments to the white levels applied when saving the file, only jpeg files do.  There's no tag on the RAW.

I routinely shoot RAW and jpeg at the same time.  Regardless of the white balance settings, there will be a difference between the jpeg and RAW version in "as shot" mode.  The RAW has no white balance applied, the jpeg does.

I have never heard that about RAW files and WB.  I wonder how true that is..? That would be pretty lame if WB didn't really change the original image.

as far as the dots go, they don't have to do with white balance.  That is for the light meter, it changes it from an average of most of the frame to spot mode where it only takes a reading in one specific spot.

What compression are you using, ie how are you scaling the images and saving them for the web?

no no no, not questioning your photo techniques, only asking how your saving the images because the is a little bit of blocking in some of the dark areas.  Its probably just how much compression your using...

WB should not change the original image in RAW. That's what RAW is all about, isn't it? It consists of virgin (minimally processed) data from the CCD. As far as I know, none of the other adjustments (sharpness, contrast, toning, etc.) on my 40D come into play when using RAW.

But then again, read this.

As mentioned, the white balance in the photos is off; it is too warm. The long shutter speeds you are using and the under exposure of the scene probably contributes to the problem.  If you want to shoot in the RAW mode, the white balance easily can  be set in the RAW converted.  As indicated above, if shooting in the RAW mode the camera white balance setting is irrelevant.  You can set the white balance when processing the photo.  Using a RAW converter is really very easy.  In CS3 or CS4, you can also adjust the white balance in Photoshop for JPEG files.

I opened a few of your photos in Photoshop and look at the EXIF data (which includes some of the camera settings).  The car is underexposed, and yet the shutter speed varies from one to five seconds depending on the shot even though in some photos you used an f stop of 2.8 and a higher ISO.  Those shutters speeds are too long for this type of photo.  There does not appear to be enough ambient light when these photos were taken to take the photos without a flash.

Try photographing the car with the sun at your back, if you are not already doing that.  Also try using a flash, even if you are taking the photos outside in daylight, particurly if the sun is not at your back or there is too little sunlight. If you use a flash, either set the camera to Auto, P  (Program) or M (Manual) mode.  I like to use the manual mode when using a flash.  Try all three modes.

/\ sweet.  nice feed back...really appreciate this...and thanks for taking the time.....yeah, while taking pics I was just adjusting numbers up, down, etc... to get the feel for what it did, rather than understand what they are supposed to do...

Is that the factory aero kit on the other M?  And yes, your car does look like it can go off-roading, but it still looks tight!!  Loving that JP kit..
