Is the future of autombiledom? It would be cool if we could run cars on CO2, since the EPA thinks it's a pollutant. Of course, the trees wouldn't be happy for us to use up their food source for drag racing.

Seriously, that's a nice little car. How old is your son? Was this a science project, or ... ?

He's obviously taking after his hot-rod daddy!

EDIT: That last shot of it looks a lot like an Acura ZDX!

Just turned 12. Science project. Body is a paper-mâché shell....'designed' and finished in one night as the one he made of lego was deemed 'unoriginal' by his teacher. I didn't understand that at all. He didn't make it out of a kit, but from scratch. Lego is an incredible launchpad for the young imagination....

Ugh! But you are right. I won't tell him that because he/we think that Acura is hideous....

Another question or three ... I'm assuming it uses a CO2 cartridge for propulsion, but I'm not sure where the powerplant resides. There is a block of wood where I would expect it to go. Is that to hold the cartridge in place when installed? Also, how does he puncture the cartridge to get the car going?

Last but not least, I'm curious about the rear tow hook. Purpose?

My wife was thinking of doing a school tournament slot car racing thing like this.  I was thinking of putting in a "ringer" where I'd put a "A" rocket engine in a car and put an igniter in and launch that puppy.  Talk about flying, lol, it would be awesome!

1. Yes.
2. You can see it at the back of the car (barely). It is held in place against the wood block by three tie wraps. One holding it down, and two preventing it from veering left or right. You pull out the old and slide in the new. Kind of clever.
3. The front block and the screw hold the 'body' off the frame.
4. The teacher has a little plunger like gadget that punctures the cartridge.
5. Front and rear eye hooks are for the string that keeps the car on track.

One of his friend's car didn't contain the cartridge and the thing actually took off and hit the teacher in the shin. My son says they have it on video. I'll try to get it....

Ah, the whole diabolical scheme becomes clear now.

Thanks.

Cool.  I think that's the same little CO2 cannister that my wife uses in our whipped cream dispenser.

Cool little project!  Remdins me of my days with my dad doing the pinewood derby.  My Dad used to build architectural models for a living so needless to say he got into it as well.  I need to find that thing...  We were stuck using gravity, this is the next step!
