Honda pulls the plug on the NSX supercar
« Reply #31 on: December 19, 2008, 03:04:56 AM »

Quote
Honda keeps dropping one shocking news after another. After announcing that it is pulling out of Formula One racing, Honda now says that the Nissan GT-R will no longer have a competitor. That’s right the company has pulled the plug on the 600-hp 5.5L V10 NSX supercar due to an economic slowdown and declining sales.

Besides having a running prototype and posting some competitive Nurburgring laps, Honda’s CEO Takeo Fukui said that all development on the NSX will cease.

Honda was expected to show a concept version of the NSX at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month. Now all Detroit funding will go towards showing the production Insight Hybrid, FC Sport, FCX Clarity and the CR-Z concept.

Halted, but I doubt it's scrapped for good.  They'll most likely pick the project back up once the market is there to support it.

Yeah, but isn't that kind of like building the highest end PC you can find, sticking it in the closet, and bringing it back out in (1-2+ years)? You may have something to start with, but everyone else is way ahead of you already. Smiley

I'd say your analogy would be more akin to saying designing it rather than building it.  Honda wasn't past the point of no return.  I think if they had made a substantial investment in plant retooling and placed orders putting the supply chain in motion for actual production, you would see the car happen regardless.  They were most likely still at a development point where required  investment to reach completion was still more than the projected returns.  If they figured they were at least at a break even point, or even minor loss with the project, I think many would've wanted to push ahead because it's still a great marquee vehicle.

The reality is though, I don't think the competition will progress that much in the interim if Honda decides to get back in the game.  They're all cutting back as well.  Plus they're still further ahead than if they were starting from scratch, so its not like they'll have to do a ton of catch up.

I dunno. Nissan seems to be plowing forward with GTR variants (and potential infiniti variants), plus the Lexus LF-A. Only time will tell, I suppose.

I'm not holding my breath on the LF-A as long as it's rumored to be a $200k+ car.
