Acura's X6 fighter:

Quote
After a few weeks of teasing, Acura has finally revealed the ZDX, its new four-door, luxury crossover "coupe" that is clearly aimed at the similarly proportioned BMW X6. The ZDX wears the now familiar shield grille and sharp styling that has spread across the entire Acura lineup. To further emphasize the crossover's coupiness, Acura designers have hid the rear door handles in the base of the C-pillar. The ZDX rides tall on 20-inch, 9-spoke wheels and also glints under the lights thanks to a number of chrome trim pieces including a pair of shiny dual exhausts out back. Inside you'll find typical Acura luxury with high quality materials arranged in a high-tech package that includes a new multi-view rear camera system with both a wide angle and top down view. The production ZDX will be V6-powered and kept in line by Acura's superb Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.

Anything to compete with the X6 is probably destined for failure, look at what they're aiming for. Grin

Interior is pretty interesting though.

No way
I'll take my iDrive over anything else
Programmable buttons, menu shortcuts
You can get to your common stuff in one click and that is without even leaning forward or looking

There's a dial and what looks to be 5 or 6 buttons for the screen.  Everything else is stereo and HVAC related.

The steering wheel buttons are a bit overkill though.

I have no problem with that either!

Seriously though, I don't mind a menu system to set up passenger door unlock, light timers, etc.  But that's it.

Shortcuts are no good.  You have 8 buttons right?  and you can't label them (that would look terrible!)

8/10 Total?  I want one button only for, say, radio stations (a must with SAT radio, I have 5 settings for talk show comedy alone), what if I wanted a particular station and got a menu shortcut instead for the heater or 911?

I wish i could show or explain how shortcuts and menus work on iDrive
Even most BMW drives dont know how to use iDrive properly
I can jump from source to source (HD radio - SAT - MP3/CD - iPod) in one click
Once in source, FM/HD radio or SAT, i can use iDrive wheel to scroll trough presets or stations
Browsing iPod is a breeze, how do you do that with buttons?
I can relax and scroll as much as i want through list of songs or playlists
One click makes my car to call my wife
One click starts routing me home on Nav
One click displays my phonebook, which is again, easy to scroll with iDrive wheel that is right by your hand

And the cool thing about this is i never have to look down or on the dash or memorize (like in my FX) where is what
Reading those tiny buttons while driving is not good

I don't use ipods on the car, I have a carputer for that, mostly for the search playlist/artist function.  The ability to creat playlist on the fly is very useful: search an artist, click add, another add to queue, add playlist, add, and off you go.  I rate songs as I listen and then it uploads to the home media center.  The car can even announce song artist/info for you, in case you don't want to get distracted.

I'd hate to scroll, say 20K songs (that's what I could fit on my last 80Gb Ipod), or more than 50 playlists...so that's not enough, unless you can be happy with 1/10 of your material at your disposal any given time.

As for the idrive overall, maybe you're right, so have they improved recently (again?).  I tested a 5 series in 06, the sales guy looked lost.  I may google later for some reviews.

I'm glad you're enjoying your carputer
I guess it doesnt come with the car

Regarding iDrive:
New 2009 one is way ahead of the previous versions
HD resolution, nice colors, etc
Completely re-thought flow and interface

Mine is 2008 however, which is previous gen, but still very good overall
Not sure about 06 on 5,6-er
Keep in mind, these guys at the dealerships sometimes are just soo dumb
You'd be surprized to some things they say about cars they sell
No wonder they get lost in its own yard

Humm, same with the ipod, right?  otherwise it's just cd/radio.

Think of the carputer as an ipod, but with a 7" touchscreen.  That's where it all started for me, and that's what I use on a daily basis.  The rest (GPS, OBD, Google Earth) I just do it because I can!

I'd check the new idrive later.  HD resolution really, on that tiny screen?  Gotta see that.
