Got the car washed today.. amazingly, it doesn't seem to have given me the ability to take a half decent picture.

I hate to ask this, since the photos I take aren't any better, but, are you taking pictures with your cell phone?

Are you still thinking of selling the car?

Sadly, not a cell phone camera.. although  I do think there is something wrong with the camera (but I do admittedly still suck at taking pictures). It's a canon SD750.

The SD750 is a fine camera....

Exactly. But I don't know if it's "broken" or I am just really, really bad at taking pictures. I mean, I would think that even in full-auto-dummy mode I should be able to shoot something decent, yet all I get is what you see above...

Looks like the camera was having trouble with the lighting.  You should have tried spot metering on some black spot on the car with no reflections.  It looks like the camera was trying to average the black car in a dark environment with a bright window...no good.  The focus is not right in many shots either, maybe it's the camera, maybe the reflections confused it.   On the next to last picture, it looks like the focus went to the car reflected on yours! LOL

^SD750 spot metering is fixed to the center. So be careful. Center in on the black, then use AE lock and frame the shot. You could also try Night Snapshot mode to get a better exposure. Also see if you have Face Detection on, might cause you focus issues in this situation.

Yep...it's a tricky spot to take a pic anyway.

Sorry Oz for picking on your photo taking but I think you have to take pictures from some different angles and perspectives.  There are a lot of shots that are all pretty much the same.  If you take a bunch of shots that are all different angles, heights, and distances away from the vehicle you are bound to get a few good ones.

Of course, this advice is coming from the guy with the fuzzy grey avatar. Embarrassed

Not picking at all. I'm looking for the feedback. A lot of those are from different angles, etc. Subtle differences, but they are different.. but netted the same result. Sad

Black cars are no easy task to shoot!  The other thing confusing the camera is the amount of light spilling in from outside.  Go out and shoot right as the sun is about to set and as it is cresting the horizon you will have much better results.  I don't think any of them were out of focus, it looks like the camera was using a slow enough shutter speed to pick up some hand shake.  Keep that camera still and keep shooting!
