2009 FX50Sport
« on: July 23, 2008, 05:41:19 PM »

OK, so I said goodbye to the best daily driver (for me) I've ever had.  Bye bye to the M45 (sniff sniff).  First off, the dealer said he would have the tail lights switched out for the OEM ones so Yes I still will sell the clear ones to you guys when I get them back.
OK, first I drove a G37Sport coupe.  Nice car, kind of like an M but smaller and a bit rougher.  I would equate it to being like the accord and the civic (no i'm not saying they are the same cars just the difference between the two).
OK, now to the FX.  I drove a tricked out one with tech and sport and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Fit: Seemed good all the panels were typical and tight.  There was no give on any of the interior panels and there were no squeeks anywhere in the car.
Exterior: I know others have said they liked it in person.  I will respectfully disagree.  The lights I liked and they had this feline look that was pretty nice.  Rear 3/4 view was cool and from the rear it looked snazzy.  The side view was a downer for me though.  What is with all cars having that crazy side vent these days.  ISF/Focus/FX/Sky/XF, it's getting a little out of hand.  At least this one actually works, I'll give em that but when it is in Chrome like that it just seems very out of place and didn't meld with the rest of the car.  It's just my opinion but I definately didn't like that.  The rest looked a little too bulbous to me.  Kind of like someone stuck an air hose in a sedan and pumped it up.  The front.  uh boy.  That grill in black chrome was different and I applaud the attempt there but it truly did not do it for me.  Looked like a catfish.
Engine: Yeee ha.  This thing was awesome.  Maybe even too much power.  At a stop sign or red light it's difficult to go forward without snapping your head.  Power all over the place.  If I didn't know better, I'd say it's as fast as my M6.  (it's not but it sure feels like it).  Torque galore.  One bad thing is you pretty much hear the engine all the time.  Even just cruising along you definately hear it.  That might be great for a spin but on a long haul it would get annoying.
Suspension: Great.  Drove great and the active steer thing worked quite well.  Was very tight on curves and just a wee tiny bit of oversteer.  It has a similar feeling to the M45 but you are sitting higher up and more straight back in this thing.  Seven gears and the paddles work well.  Still blips on the downshift too.
Handling: As I mentioned, great.  Also, this car now takes the cake for me on turning radius.  My old MB 430CLK used to hold the title for me as the tightest loop you could make but honestly? this thing turns a circle in I'd say two yards flat.  Doing a YouEE in this car would be incredibly nimble.  The steering was a bit too hard to turn maybe but there is no roll in the car and considering it's taller you'd expect a little of it.
Electronics: Other than the engine this is definately a big plus.  The four video camera thing is AWESOME.  It's like a sattelite view from three feet above the car.  You see everything and when you put it into park then drive you get a front shot so no bumping crap in front of you (for when your wife drives) and the side view will prevent curb rash (wife again lol).  The other gadget was cool too.  I forget what it is called but it's for traffic.  When you are bumbling along and the car in front of you closes on you, it sort of taps your foot back on the accelerator.  You can then take your foot completely off the accelerator and it will slow down.  If you continue to close on that car it will totally slow you down by itself.  I personally HATE cars driving themselves but I'm told that if you are in traffic you don't even have to have your foot on the gas anymore.  It kind of drives itself (once again not for me but shrug).  The seatbelt also auto adjusts when you get in and click it.  It also (FINALLY) has auto lock doors.
Interior: Very nice.  Had all these great curves and spaces.  Oh the contact paper wood is gone and they finally put nice wood in there.  It's not Lexus (by Yamaha) wood but still nice and the piano black is also nice.  One bad thing is that among all this nice wood and piano, below the piano, is a cheap plastic part where the cig lighter is.  Why would they do that?  I have no idea but it stuck out for me.  The seats were very comfortable and you can adjust the "hug" on the legs and the sides.  Also they extend out below the thighs and that can be adjusted too.  The steering wheel was the G one and too small in my opinion.  The one bad thing here is the voice recognition is ruined.  On my M45 I used it a lot because it was simple, now you have like sub menus so it's two steps min to get to "Dial XXX-XXX".  I couldn't even get to "Preset B 1".  The nav is now touch screen.
Overall, well, if you like the look, this is a good car for you.  The engine is marvelous and the interior is also very high caliber.  There are a ton of gadgets and it is even good for the snow being it's all wheel drive.  It's a bit pricey but if you are in love with the look, I think you can't go wrong here.  I'd drive this before I drove a Cayenne.

I didn't know you were returning the M.  So are you saying you'd get the FX or you're still looking at something else?

lets see what can i say?

didn't drive the V8, but the V6 was pretty quiet... just like my car... so I guess thats no surprise really...

Funny you said catfish... i told the salesman about the catfish name all over the forums... he was kinda surprised by that... the are all calling it the shark... yeah nice try.. but not seeing it, haha.

the bumper to bumper traffic braking feature you referred to is called Intelligent Braking Assist... and that and ICC don't seem to warrant the 2700 dollars for the tech pkg IMO.

Your review kinda makes me want to drive the FX50... but not really, the FX35 seemed to be a tight and quick ride with 306hp or whatever.

I'd hardly refer to the G35's engine as quiet. I consider it to be kind of whiny ("like me" - before anyone else says it). It's not OBNOXIOUS but it's not that quiet. The g37 is even worse.

quiet in a sporty way... its not a lexus... but i didnt hear all the engine noise that Trin was talking about, and we were cruising the highway @ 80mph.  I think the FX was quieter than my car.

I didnt get the FX i test drove up to high speeds, but I thought it sounded much quieter than my M. I know they put a lot more effort into soundproofing the FX this time around.

Out of curiosity, what does she love about the jeep? Is she the kind that "it's just a car" or does it do something spectacular (like drive over curbs) really well? Smiley

I think thats a big part of it... i mean like you said the G at WOT is pretty loud... the FX is pretty quiet.

As for the Jeep... my wife had a 95 laredo... so the 05 limited blew her mind i think... heated seats, nav, dvd, rain sensing wipers (jealous!) heated outside mirrors, sonar parking, etc etc... plus I gave it to her as a surprise for xmas 05.  I think it has a lot of sentimental value, lol... you know chicks are like that.

Answering a few questions:
I took it up to 100 mph.  I threw it hard into a bunch of turns.  I slammed the brakes hard enough that the antilock brakes kicked in.  I floored it from a complete stop to 60 then back to zero.
I'd say I gave it a full blown out test drive.  Couple of other notes.  The engine being loud isn't a bad thing if you really love the sound of a cool engine.  It's just not a Lexus or even a Toyota frankly (thinking my wife's Highlander).  The exterior was obsidian black with a tan interior.  Oh and the rear view mirrors are kinda ugly.  They are like a truck or SUV's.
Seriously?  Other people have said "catfish"?  HAHAHA I thought I was being original.  The salesguy also said "shark".  I said "Cmon; all it needs is whiskers".
Yeah, I returned my M45 (wahhhh).  It was due back on August 9th and I figured I'd bring it in in case they were going to ding me for anything.  I wasn't in the market for the FX50S but I made them think I was in order to make sure they didn't dare ding me for anything.  Looks like they won't.  The one thing that I reallllllly like about the FX50S?  I've seen NONE, zero, zilch, nil on the road.  You guys know how much I love having the only one.  Hell I've even seen two IS-F's and 4 Granturismo's out there.  The sales guy said he is getting TWO a month and he's the only dealer within 50 miles (not totally true, there's one near Palo Alto).  Either way, we aren't talking about a common car.  Honestly, if they put all that great gear into a new M, I may have to give my lease on my M6 convertible to Oz.  Anyways, no news on whether the dealer wants my OEM red tail lights back.  If he does and puts em in, I'll post right away.
Oh I forgot to mention the numbers.  $1,000 off for loyalty discount.  FULL (WTF?!?!) MSRP.  $2,000 down.  $1,330 a month.  Residual was flat out 60%.  24 month 12,000 miles a year.  In my opinion these numbers suck.  Keep in mind the M6 Convertible was $120,000 car zero down $1,050 a month 24 month lease 12,000 miles a year and some lunatic residual of something like 73%.  Now I admit it was an '07 and was a executive driven car with a couple of thousand miles on it but jeez that's a big difference.  My M45 was zero down 750 a month for a 20 month lease.  I know it's a fresh car and all but cmon now, car sales are in the crapper and we are talking about a car TWICE as expensive for 280 less a month and I'm not even including the down payment.  I know I got a great deal and all (4 hours of negotiation!) but something isn't adding up.  I'm guessing if I truly sat down and went for the negotiation I could have trimmed that a lot but those initial numbers would have been a nonstarter for me.

Hmm... Considering what I'm paying for my G35 as a finance, I'm starting to think I should (could) start looking at 60-70k cars on a lease next time around. Smiley

Too bad I want to be in the $400-500 range this time!
