So at about 7PM I decided to start calling dealers, the first one on my list, coconut creek infiniti, told me they got about 20 FX'es today. I asked them how late they were open until (9) and proceeded to make my way down there..
So in reality they got something like 10 FX35's in various configurations, and 2-3 FX50's. Only one of the FX50's had the sport package; it was missing the tech package though. They had a few FX35's w/ tech.
At any rate, I drove the FX50S.. so here is my mini review, which is COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE:
I have owned an '04 FX 45, and currently have an '06 M45. I was expecting to be revolted by the looks of the FX in person, but fortunately, I do think this is one of the many vehicles that does look better in person than in pictures.
Is it the most gorgeous vehicle I've seen? No.
Do
I think it looks as nice as the M? No.
It definitely has an 'evolutionary' look vs the previous generation FX. I really, really liked the previous FX exterior, but the interior was not up to par when compared to the M, or even the rest of the current Infiniti line.
It doesn't look nearly as cartoonish in person. It's still not "spot on" but they did do a really good job in maintaining a lot of the original styling cues. I think the hood is a little overdone. The headlights are very cool looking, they look like two small projectors (two in each lamp enclosure), about the size of the foglights below. The ones closest to the center of the car seem to be the low beams, and when they are on, the ones towards the outside of the car have a slight glow to them - kind of like dimmed DRL's. I thought I had a picture of this but I guess not. The LED puddle lamps under the mirrors are pretty neat, too. It wasn't completely dark outside so I didnt get to completely see the 6/8/10/12/1000 multi-stage lighting infiniti mentions..
The new interior is leaps and bounds above the previous generation, but still doesn't seem to "flow" like the rest of the Infiniti interiors. The steering wheel appears to be taken straight from the G, and it just doesn't look 100% right in the FX. Same goes for the gauge cluster. The paddle shifters are very nice though, and have a very solid feel to them. The center stack also looks like it's straight out of a G35/EX35; that's okay.. but I think they could have done a little better. I'd like to see it more in between the M's "recessed" stack and the G35's standard stack.
The vehicle feels overall roomier inside vs the previous FX, but not by a whole lot.
The two piece inflatable bolsters on the driver's side seat are really nice. I was surprised how much I actually liked them.
The quilted leather looks nice, but doesn't make my jaw drop.
The FX50 is ONLY offered with the piano black + maple wood combination. There is no all-piano-black option. This is a big disappointment to me, as I think the maple wood doesn't blend well with the rest of the colors; and quite frankly I think it looks a bit cheap.
The rest of the interior is done quite well. I am tired of seeing the same old door lock/window buttons in EVERY single nissan/infiniti product but I guess they have to save money some how.
The dynamic suspension, much to my amazement, actually seems to work. I flipped between auto and sport modes and could (seemingly) feel a mild difference in ride quality. Even in "sport" mode the FX seems to absorb road imperfections much better than the previous FX could have ever dreamed, and debatably, better than my M45 sport. Since the car I drove literally just rolled off the truck they hadn't done any prep work at all. I think the tires were still over-inflated and yet the ride was still great.
The interior seems to be much better insulated from outside noise than the old FX as well.
The FX50 has some get up and go. The new 7 speed transmission feels really nice and moves between gears FAIRLY quickly and efficiently although not with lightning speed (such as the IS-F). It seems to be very biased towards doing engine braking/downshifting as well, but perhaps that was my imagination. I didnt drive the car very hard since, again, it is brand new and wasn't even prepped to be on the road (and I don't abuse cars that other people could end up with!), but I did do some mildly spirited acceleration and cornerning.. and the FX handled it with ease and precision as expected.
I like the way they brought over the "sport" mode from the new G (you move the gearshift lever to the left for "manual" and it puts the transmission into a mildly more aggressive shift mode ("DS"))
The auto-manual seems to shift somewhat decently but I wouldn't say it's any faster than the M at moving between gears.
So, to summarize:
Interior quality is up considerably from the previous FX
The new exterior design is debatable
The exterior body lines are questionable as well. I really do not like the way infiniti has started "recessing" the front hoodline in all the cars to make it seem as if it's not really there, when it blatantly is unless you buy the car in black. The way the front bumper attaches to the rest of the body seems like an afterthought, much like the current G35/G37.
The paint jobs these cars are getting seem to be HORRIBLE. Much like my experience a few months ago when looking at M's, G'S, and glancing at EX'es.. the darker colors seem to suffer from a HORRIBLE "orange peel" effect. I am not sure what the deal is with this.
The FX50 with the sport rims looks really nice. The wheels have a nice finish to them, and balance out the whole car, I think. The smaller 20's and 19(?)'s on the 35's look really, really weird with the fat tires they wear.
The sport package makes a huge difference in the vehicle appearance, it has dark tinted headlights, roof rails, side vents, and lower body trim. More of a "satin" color with the sport vs. the non-sport's "chrome" look.
The new engine, although I didnt get to heavily drive it, seems very well thought out. The shifts are smooth and reasonably quick, but the transmission does seem to have to hesistate a bit between gear shifts. I am sure after it has time to 'learn' a driver's habits it would get better.
Here are a random number of pictures taken from my phone - I didn't have my digicam with me.
PS - Sorry this is such a bad review.. I'm really not good at forming coherent sentences.

If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to ask.
