G37 sedan loaner review
« on: December 21, 2009, 05:23:14 PM »

I have been driving a G37 sedan for a few days now and really like this car.  Don't overly care for the interior, some items are better built vs. my M.  The window buttons seem more solid and better built, the side view mirrors feel solid (my Ms, moves too easy when cleaned) steering wheel feels a tad thicker and is smaller vs. the M (like, esp thicker...if it is).

but what really shines is the drive.  The 7 speed engine make a hugh diff....much smoother vs. my 5 speed.  I feel the g37 is quicker than the M as of course weight of the M.  The option to put the car is DS is nice... not sure what DS is, but it seems like more of a sport setting, revs higher, etc. which i dig, the manual shifting is a tad more rough vs. my M...not sure why, but the DS option is damn nice.

seem like i get better gas milage as well.

all in all, I really like the G37, too small for me, don't really care for the interior, but what a dang blast to drive!

the steering wheel is definitely thicker.  i really miss my G steering wheel.  And yeah its a tad quicker, but the M is roomier and comfier by miles.  DS mode (surprised you don't have a DS on your M... I have it... but yeah its drive sport.  it adjust shift points and lets it rev higher.  It also means you have to shift with the paddle shifters if you change gears with them.  (you can paddle change gears and it will eventually go back where it wants to if its in D mode).

I thought the 3.7L was a little sluggish compared to the VQ35HR in the G, but I have the VQ35HR in the M with 7spd auto so its major enough differences in each to make the comparison hard.

but i miss my steering wheel Sad

can't wait to drive my M again to get a feel feed back.

Nice quick write up law; pretty much sums up my impressions of the car as well. The DS mode is a blast (especially when compared to the non-DS M). DS actually seems to do some clever stuff; much more aggressive shifting at throttle tip in, more aggressive down shifting for heavy braking - and if i recall properly, it would even do gear holding during a curve? It's been a little while though.

Yeah, I recall not liking the interior size of the thing and I hate the fact that I see so many "IS"'s around town but I do have to admit I've seen maybe 3 IS-F's so that should alleviate that issue.  I was thinking that I could "live" without a fast daily driver and was looking at a Q5 or a SRX caddy but just driving around the M6 I realized that I definately enjoy the driving more and need the giddy up.  So, now I'm leaning towards the IS-F.  You know I'll end up changing my mind a few more times though!

Now with my M back, I def dig the comfort, room and finish of the M.  The steering feel (stiffer) is nicer on the G and the steering wheel thickness is nicer on the G, the window buttons feel solid on the G, not so much the M.

I wish the M had the DS mode and not just auto or m mode.  The DS was fun to have.

the stiffer steering was also nice.

all in all, i take the M, looks, size, comfort, interior, are great - just would not mind the above items...

It's been awhile since I had my M, but I guess I thought the DS mode was where you shift it yourself, bumping the shifter to go up or down in the gears.

Am I mis-remembering that? I know my Lexus has DS mode and that's what it is in it ...  Huh?

I have to agree on the interior. We drove a G37 when my wife's lease was up a few months ago, and while the car drove nice and even rode good, the interior was amazingly CHEAP-looking. I understand the 2011 coming in April is supposed to have an upgraded interior ... I hope so!

Mike, on the G37 there are three different positions you can drive the car in.  1. the regular auto shift mode, 2. the DS mode which is still auto but the shift positions are adjusted to higher revs - much more sporty and quick and 3. the manual, shift yourself mode.

So the M only has the auto and the manual shift yourself mode.  Sometimes I like the DS auto but better shite thingy....
