Yeah, hopefully you guys don't have any major issues.  Just need to keep an eye out for them.

I was thinking the same thing earlier. That might be directly tied to the theme set up.

Oztiks,

Can this be changed within a theme? Or would that entail a customization of that theme?

This any better? Too big? Not big enough? Just right? Smiley It's the same as the "normal" post size now, I think. .. thoughts?

My advice is to be prepared to upgrade to a pay software solution within a year or so.  Other sites I've known in the past to use SMF have ultimately need to ugprade in time as the site grows, its more than SMF can efficiently handle, Mighy Titans went through similar growing pains.

One of the downsides of making a successful site. Smiley

I see you are using vB too! Sheep, all of you! Wink

It is uplifting to hear from someone who has walked in our shoes and is still standing. As Oztiks replied, we considered numerous programs, both commercial and open-source. Our primary considerations were:

  • Out of box functionality-ease of setup
  • Cost
  • Scalability
  • Portability

Without going into a lot of detail, SMF won for various reasons. Cost was not one of them. In fact it ended up being a non-issue. I have approved software that has cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I have authorized ALFs (Annual Licensing Fees) that have run thousands of dollars per user. Not boasting or being pretentious here, just putting things into perspective, even though these were non-personal nor individual type transactions. Non of the commercial site software came close to these figures. When some have ALF's that are less than $50 for a site, it makes me wonder of the long term viability of many sites.

As for scalability, I think SMF will fit the bill for now, and again, as Oztiks mentioned, 2.0 is approaching. The current package has many features we needed/wanted to help differentiate us from similar forums. It also has a wealth of plug-ins that can further enhance our member experience.

It is no longer an impossible task to move from one forum db to another. Granted, it is not necessarily transparent or seamless, but it can be done. If approached in a systematic and logical manner, the risks can be properly mitigated.

Have we made the right choice? Will we regret it later?

Absolutely. Possibly, but unlikely.

I think we put in a reasonable amount of thought into our decision. I appreciate your concern and hope that in the event we do need to change, that it is for all the right reasons. In either event, if it is necessary, we will be ready.

Thanks for joining our small group and I hope to see more posts from you. You were a great resource and innovator at FA.

I would like to see a darker background. I have a flat screen monitor and I sit in the dark sometimes and the white backdrop kills my eyes. I'm still surfing and getting use to the site.

So going along with the post about costs, what sort of operating costs are you expecting... and what sort of reimbursement are you expecting?  I am speaking in terms of sponsors or donors (since there is the "treasury" above).  Sounds as if you already have a plan in place to address these issues!

Agreed. I'm laying on the floor in my son's bedroom (I put him to sleep a couple of hours ago). And the background is starting to hurt!

Right now, I'm focusing on building this site and I'm really happy that it's taken me almost three hours since I got home to read and respond to tonight's posts!

As for costs/revenue, I am considering a 'free' sponsorship period of three-six months to get us more hits and members. The short term financial goal is to get back our fixed costs. Domain registration, service provider, servers, etc. It would be nice if that came from member donations, but I can't really expect that as we haven't provided all that much yet and probably won't for a bit longer. A little further out, but still near term, is to generate enough revenue to provide 'appreciation' gifts to all our hard working moderators. These could initially be in the form of shirts, hats, etc.

A black or deep grey would help. I'm really not familiar with this platform so I'm still getting use to it.

Well said Omar and thanks.  Basically, if you're willing to get dirty, I think any of the software packages can offer stability and what you want.  Some are going to be easier than others to exploit for your needs and customization.  I think ultimately it comes down to the kind of support you get from others in the community and your comfort level in digging through the code.  If you have the ability to get into the nitty gritty of SMF's code, you'll do well.  One of my friends runs a site using phpBB and he's very aggressive with code modifications.  He's done things with the site far past what you'd expect from the original source code.  If you're resourceful enough, the sky is the limit!

I went through the same thought process when I was looking at packages for my club's site.  Ultimately the decision was driven by a desire to have a compatible front end interface, ease of transition for the end users and the same scalability and flexibility that you mentioned.  That took me to vB, but I don't think its necessarily the choice for everyone.  I think the combined functionality of subdreamer and the support of vbulletin.org is what really won me over.

In regards to the LFA's, I think many of the developers expect most sites to fail or go stagnant within a year.  If you look around, its amazing how many sites there are using message board software with little to no real activity.  And considering how many new sites start every day, there's probably more money to be made on new business with a higher initial start-up cost, rather than higher sustained costs.

I'll check in when I can.  Been pretty busy lately.  I kind of dropped out of the mainstream forum scene so I can focus on the club.  Much more relaxing that way!

That's the most time consuming part of admining a site.  Being active and trying to maintain the back end.  Particularly when you have full time requirements already.  But it certainly is fun. Wink

It'll also catch you by surprise what many people are willing to donate.  Look at frontierboard.com and how many people became "supporting members" within the first 2 months.

For the most part, unless you're hitting 50-100+ active users at any given time, I don't think you're going to tap your server's resources, even on a shared server.  I'm on a shared server, $30 a month and we have excellent response and we get 10-20 people active at a time.

That's by design. No, seriously, I just looked at the permissions and everything is fine. I'll take another look when I get home. My apologies for the inconvenience.
