Direct Access to Posts

When reading a post, clicking on the 'stack of newspapers' next to the name of the post, or on the name itself will give you the url that will directly point to that post. This makes it easy to direct someone to a specific post within a thread.

This url will take you directly to post #6 within the target thread.

Getting to New/Last Posts Quickly

Immediate access to new/last posts:

  • There is no 'View First Unread' at the top of any newly updated post. However, there is a 'New' button in the parent forum. Clicking that will take you straight to the newest unread post.
  • At this same view (parent), clicking on the on the right most icon in the 'Last Post' column will take you to the last post.
  • On the home page there is a little toggle left of the 'Home' Button. Use this to open up the User Info box above it. When this option is activated, you have access to other links: 'Show unread posts since last visit' and 'Show new replies to your posts'
  • Child boards have an icon at the very left that is color coded to indicate the presence of new posts.
  • And of course there is this at the bottom of the page: "Latest Post: xxxx View the most recent posts on the forum"

You can add attachments to your posts:

  • Click the 'Additional Options' below the editing dialog box
  • Click on 'Choose File' to attach your document. The forum supports many popular formats: .doc, .gif, .jpg, .mpg, .pdf, .png, .txt, .zip
  • Current maximum total attachment size per post is 500kb
  • Current maximum attachment size per post is 200kb
  • Current maximum attachments per post is 10
  • Once attached you can delete from post by deselecting individual attachments

Attachments will be listed at the end of the post in the order they were uploaded.

[Edit] Updated to reflect the fact the gallery is now online. Deleted comment: "Our 'Gallery' is MIA in this particular theme (Babylon-trying to resolve that tonight), but you can add attachments to your posts."

Customizing Your Experience

To change your personal preferences, select 'Profile' from the Forum pull down or click on your own screen name in the 'Users Online' box on the left of your screen in the Forums.

Under the Modify Profile section on the left:

Go to 'Look and Layout' Preferences.

  • Change your Time Offset to match your timezone. I use 'auto detect'
  • Most new users will want the following enabled:
    • Return to topics after posting by default.
    • Show most recent personal messages at top.

Go to 'Notifications and Email' to set how you want to be notified of responses to your posts or replies.

Go to 'Personal Message Options' to set how you want to archive messages and be notified of new messages.

Go to 'Edit Buddies' to set up your buddy list.

Pretty URLs

The url 'formatter' in the editor will place the following around a link: (substitute [ for ( and ] for ) )

(url)http://www.carfaq.org/index.php/board,81.0.html(/url)

which can be excruciatingly lengthy and disruptive in the middle of a sentence. You clean it up to look like this by doing the the following. After clicking the Insert Hyperlink button in the editor, change the following in blue:

(url=http://www.carfaq.org/index.php/board,81.0.html)Link(/url)

You can further enhance it by bracketing your keyword ('Link' in the example above) with (u) and (/u). This will make it look like this: Link
