Ferrari California Official Release
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:39:15 PM »

Ferrari released the first three photos of its new Ferrari California earlier this month, and the Italian automaker has now released two more detail shots. The exotic grand tourer will be on display at the Paris International Car Show in October. The hardtop convertible is powered by Ferrari's 4.3-liter V8, producing 460 horsepower.

It's not known if the car will be marketed as simply "Ferrari California," or as "Ferrari F430 GT California," as a recent trademark filing suggested.

The all-aluminum California is the first Ferrari to feature its engine mounted in the mid-front position.

The car can hit 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds, according to the Italian automaker. A new seven-speed dual clutch transmission debuts in the California, and the F1-Trac traction control system which was first offered with the 599 GTB Fiorano is also included.

"The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever," the automaker said in a press release.

Interestingly enough, the new Ferrari model actually started out life as a Maserati, according to our sources. The new model was developed under the codename M139 — M for Maserati — and was intended to complete Maserati's current lineup — giving the Italian Marque the Quattroporte sports sedan, the GranTurismo coupe and a hardtop convertible. But after Ferrari's 2005 split from Maserati, Ferrari decided to keep the M139 program entirely for itself. As a result, the California rides on the GranTurismo platform.

No those aren't photoshopped colors on the car... those are SOME of the available factory colors!

They are actually connected to the exhaust.  This was a weird release for Ferrari.  They like to slowly build up to stuff but this was the first car in recent memory that was just dumped on the public.  "Here's our new car!"  Yes I'm already on the list.  Hopefully I've done enough business over there that I will get the free car but I sincerely doubt it.  I think I'm still two cars away from the free ones.  Cross your fingers!

Before you start asking how do you get a free Ferrari, here's my other post:

Well, you can't get an F430 spyder for $211 unless you have purchased at least. . I'd guess 3 from the dealer already at typical prices.  Then you have to get on the list, then you have to try to get to the top of the list.  Most people on the top of the list get their car for FREE.  Yes, I said for FREE.  Typically, the first say 3 or 4 on the list get their car at MSRP.  They get to drive it for a year or two then they HAVE to give it back to Ferrari dealer they bought it from.  The dealer resells it at usually a profit such that you get all your money back plus taxes plus insurance plus everything else.  No, you can't go around them (well you can but it's a bit complicated how to do it).  Ferrari has you sign a document saying you give them the first option to buy the car from you and they are actually a lien holder on the car.
Here's a real example: Brand new 2006 Ferrari F430 Spyder left SF Ferrari for $218,000 in November 2005.  Car was brought back in June 2007 and sold by the dealer for $290,000.  Original buyer got all his money back including taxes, insurance, hell even gas.  Dealer split the remainder with him.  Eseentially he got PAID to drive the F430 for a year and a half.  Now this is just for new ones off the lot that sell to the guys lucky enough to be at the top of the list.  I know the guy with the 599 Fiorino and he already has had offers for $60k more than he paid for it and he has had the car for over a year.  Crazy huh guys?  I'm still working my way up the list.  I'm #4 or 5 I think for the California but I may not get it because the dealer only expects 2.  The Scuderia?  Forget it.  They actually aren't even putting folks on the list for the F430 anymore because by the time they get off the list, the replacement will already be here.  Oh and I'm pretty far down on that list too.  Gotta buy a few more to move up

LOL, yeah they are real.  I was at the launch party on Aug 15th and it's a stunning car.  I just don't quite understand what it's for though.  It's not a v12 and it's got the v8 up front but it's not a gtb so it sort of sits between the two families.  In addition, the 430 is faster and comes in convertible (albeit not a hard top).  All in all, it's a rather strange addition to the mix.  The styling is. . . well it's better than the 612 but I'm not sure you would call it jaw dropping.
