New McLaren roadcar, the MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C, to run against the Ferrari 458 Italia.

Lots of picture at Evo mag (love this mag btw)

Quote
The new McLaren supercar is finally here. Over 15 years after the legendary F1 was put into production comes this, the rather more intricately named MP4-12C.

McLaren admits it’s inspired by the firm’s halo car, while there’s a clever new chassis architecture and a host of Formula 1 technology on board.

It is an entirely new car, with no carryover parts from other models (so no link to the outgoing Mercedes McLaren SLR), its heart being a bespoke new engine. It’s a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that boasts 600bhp and, apparently, the highest specific power output in its class. Torque is rated at 442lb ft, 80 per cent of which is available from below 2000rpm.

Look at 0-60mph taking sub-3.5sec and a maxium speed beyond 200mph. And while there are no firm emissions figures yet, McLaren promises the highest bhp to CO2 output figure of any car on sale with an internal combustion engine. That's some claim.

It’s achieved via a number of technologies that aim to put the mid-engined, rear-drive 12C ahead of the game in the mid-size supercar class.

The car’s main structure is a ‘Carbon Monocell’, a concept lifted straight from grand prix cars. It’s a carbon monocoque shell, which provides a supremely strong structure that also shaves a lot of weight compared to more conventional setups.  It provides a narrower overall shape to the 12C that makes it more compact and usable, as well as aiding the dynamics. The weight distribution is 43/57 front/rear.

To keep in touch with the Ferrari 458 Italia – the 12C’s key foe – there’s a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox dubbed ‘Seamless Shift’. It’s a lightweight system, and as with competitors, boasts a number of modes (including auto, sport, winter and launch control). It differs, however, in that its paddles (left for down, right for up) operate as one big rocker switch, meaning you can pull or push them to change gear, as in Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 car.

More weight-saving tech comes in the shape of composite forged aluminium and cast iron brakes, light alloys and clever positioning of all of the car’s components – including the engine’s radiators – to cut unnecessary pipework.

Other technology includes Brake Steer – which stops the inside rear wheel spinning to cut understeer during fast cornering – and proactive suspension – a system that gives complete control over the car’s tendency to roll, using hydraulically interconnected dampers (doing away with anti-roll bars) to vary the amount of body roll the car will allow. The idea is to blend immense grip levels with class-leading ride quality. We look forward to finding out if it works.

The styling is, to some eyes, quite tame. Ignore the burnt orange paintwork and trick doors and the MP4-12C breaks little ground, but according to McLaren, it’s the supercar that doesn’t shout about its extreme performance, something that many buyers will crave in a market with increasing hostility towards high performance machinery. It certainly won’t stand out like that pesky Ferrari will.

And if you’re wondering about the name, MP4 is the chassis designation of McLaren’s GP cars, the C denotes the new supercar’s carbon chassis, while 12 is how the car scores on the company’s performance register that uses a secret formula to compare cars, taking into account power, weight, emissions and aerodynamics. We've no idea what its key rivals – the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Gallardo – or, indeed, the McLaren F1 score. There’ll be future McLaren’s that hit higher numbers, though…

The McLaren MP4-12C will be on sale from 2011, costing around £150,000. There are plans to make around 1000 a year. If you want an in-depth insight into the car, the company and the people behind it, grab issue 136 of evo, on sale Weds September 16.

Love the brake steering tech, and all the F1 pedigree.  The styling is not that good, though, and I'm not sure about the engine.

Is the McLaren that boring?  Let's see:

http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt289/mongrelexo/458.jpg

Hummm...the Ferrari headlights, looks like a hyper modded Celica/Fiesta?  I like the rear on the Ferrari though, and the hips.  I love hips... Grin

Also the roofline and the glass area on the Ferrari looks huge by comparison.  Not good in my book.

I think the McLaren is more austere, probably will age better...Can't wait to know more about the TT V8, looks very interesting.  Will they make a TT 4.2L later?  Easy to reach 700HP+ then.

What I like best on the McLaren is that I know they will compete (Le Mans, ALMS, FIAGT) and the car will get better because of it.  The handling must be a dream, like on the original best-handling and exclusive-car-ever Gordon Murray designed 3 seater McLaren F1 road car.

I think the only thing that can be more exclusive than a Ferrari is a McLaren (for now, since this is their 2nd road car!  Smiley)

i'll have to disagree.  while the car is "rare" it looks like so many other cars.  The front looks like a lambo or a corvette (if you cover the bumper), those scoops on the side kinda bring a saleen look and the back looks like a corvette from the 3/4 view and an Aston Martin from the rear view.

You have to at least say the Ferrarri looks like nothing but a ferrarri.

Okay, I see your point.  I don't think both are gorgeous, I'm just saying that the McLaren is probably going to age better.

I still don't like Ferrari's vertically over extended headlights, the high roof line/big glass area and the black mouth guard.  The sides and the rear (not from the back though) looks great.

Again, you're right, McLaren is not unique one bit.  It doesn't mean it looks bad by comparison.  And if has the build quality of the predecessor, it will sell.

I was expecting a Mercedes engine, if they had the trouble to develop their own engine, that means they're serious about beginning to tackle Ferrari after 45 years in F1 (the only ones with a record to match Ferrari there).  Ferrari is as much about styling as about handling engine character and performance.   Let's wait for the reviews on the McLaren.

Here's is the MP4-12C and the million dollar F1:

Now I don't think it's such a copycat anymore. Grin   I see more evolution from the 90's design.  Wheelbase, overhang, pillars, are all very similar!

and the McLaren engine:

It doesn't need a roof scoop when the side scoops are big enough to suck up stray dogs, small kids, recycling bins or what have you.

I'm really currious about cooling though
3.8 TT has probably some decent-sized turbos
What about FMIC and oil cooler, how all of that will get air, and there is radiator too
Those openings will handle all?

They tested the McLaren F1 in the death valley, at low speed (no air flow), engine temp high, air conditioning on max, panels at 100C, then turn it off the engine.  It was rated at 231mph, but when tested in a oval, it reached 240.7 mph (386 Km/h) later.

And the F1 was not a track day car like an F40: it had all the ammenities of a GT: kenwood sound, air conditioning, electric windows, defrosting, etc.  Still, it weighted below 3000Lbs!

So I'm expecting this MP4-12C to be at least as reliable and well built for a 1/4 of the price or less.  Of course it must be heavier, and some compromises must be made, specially in the use of composite materials.  .
