Review: 2010 Audi R8 V10
« on: September 10, 2010, 05:48:26 PM »

I just realized, I never posted the review as promised.  OK, feels weird now that it's gone but here goes:

Audi R8 V10
First off the shape.  I applaud the fact that it's a completely different type of shape from current supercars.  The "blade" thing on the side is very avant garde and different.  The vents on the side are bigger than the v8 R8 and it stands a lot meaner with extra width then a regular R8.  It has the typical Audi geometric shape grill.
Body:
Is it drop dead gorgeous? Well. . . from some angles.  I think the 3/4 angle from the front is fantastic and the front angle is great.  The rear?  It's pretty good but the back 3/4 angle and side view make it look a tad bulbous.  It definately has a mean look to it.  From the front it actually looksl like it's mad at you; it's evil; and wants to take a bite out of your rear bumper.  The fit of the panels is hands down the best of any supercar I've ever driven.  Super tight with perfect and even seems.  The paint is even nice with a glow to it that is flat out gorgeous.  There is carbon fiber all over mine which is a nice touch and it's full carbon not some overlay or cover so it saves a ton of weight on my car.  The car is pretty low so you have to be careful on steep driveways and such.
Interior:
Whoa, this is nice.  Alcantara headliner is better in person than in photos.  The center stack and controls are minimal and I would say not as luxurious as say an A8 but this is a sports car.  Carbon fiber everywhere is a nice touch.  The screen is very large

and usefull.  It has steering wheel controls for voice, cruise, nav, phone, etc.  The steering wheel with it's flat bottom is very functional.  The Nav is great but it will NOT default to just having the map on at all times which is very annoying.  The seats are good, not fantastic.  Comfy and supportive but they aren't cushy or sporty.  Sort of in between which makes me wonder a bit why they didn't just do one or the other.  The headlights deserve special mention.  Not only are the LED's in there with that wicked strip.  The HEADLIGHTS are LED's.  The only production car in the world with LED Headlights and they are indeed cool.  The sound system is a Bang and Olufsen thing that sounds very good but I wouldn't put it in the same league as Mark Levinson or anything.  Besides you want to hear the engine.  Speaking of which.
Engine:
Holy smokes, this thing is fast.  When I got rid of the M6 I thought, well that's probably the last 500 HP car I'll have.  Uh, wrong.  520 here and it's the Gallardo V10 detuned by about 15 horsies.  I can't tell as it's lightning on the road.  Punch it and it seriously seems like it gets stung.  Leaps forward immediately with no loss of power the whole way.  The clutch is perfect and it has this nice hill assist thing that keeps you rock steady even on the insane hills of SF.  No more gunning it off the clutch for smooth takeoffs on a hill.  The engine howls but isn't low bass loud like a F430.  It's loud but not obnoxious.  It's really a very easy car to drive smoothly.  At 100 mph it seems like it's bored or something.  Kind of just dawdles along saying "yeah so?".

Steering:
Ahhh very nice.  Not as exact as an F430 or a Gallardo.  I imagine the steering ratio is 10% less exact then those two.  By that I mean you probably have to turn the thing 10% more to make the same turn.  But it goes where you aim right away.  Zero roll.  I really mean, zero roll.  You go into a turn and it doesn't dive in but it just doesn't lean out either.  Just sticks to the road like it's glued there.  I managed to get the back to slide out once doing 60 in a 30 mph turn but that was only because I hit the throttle too.
Overall:
This is a damn nice car.  I paid 175k for mine but it was VERY heavy on the options.  I know it sounds idiotic but that's a bargain.  It's a better car then the F430.  Frankly, it's a better car then the Gallardo too.  You can even take it to the grocery store because it's very mild if you don't drive it hard.  In my humble opinion, if you are going to have a supercar that needs to be liveable, this one should be on the top of your list.  The biggest problem I have with this car is that it's not . . . I don't know quite how to put it. . . not exotic feeling.  It kind of lacks a soul.  Must be the German influence but it just does what it is supposed to do, very very well.  That's it.  No blaring pipes or super exotic feel.  Just seems like a car.  A great car but a car nonetheless.
I'll miss this car and it was fantastic but I didn't LOVE LOVE LOVE this car.  It was just a great car, no emotional attachment.

Pictures just don't do this car justice.  I always thought it was kinda funny looking till I saw one on the road.  Its much better looking in person.

Third picture makes it look like a crab escaping it's old shell, or a car emerging from another car!

You know, I never thought of that.  It really does.  Right at the roof line where the blade is, it looks like the roof is a little higher then the back of the car giving it some sort of two cars welded together in one look.  Like I said, it's not the cars best angle.
