Wrapped flat 05 Carrera GT
«

I surf another forum and came across this Carrera GT that was orginally silver.
The owner just flew someone in from TX to the Bay Area and had the car wrapped in flat black. Looks pretty good.
Enjoy....

Menacing...
The problem is, you cannot wax a flat black, can you? If you see some defect, you cannot go and polish: it would reduce the flatness, right?
I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I imagine any clear coat you put over it would simply make it shine. You can just wash it and leave to the elements...

It is vinyl....
Rip, guy lives in our neck of the woods and I think he may own a shop in the East Bay that specializes in Porsche tuning.

If I had a car of that level, I'm pretty sure I'd opt for something like that than trying to tweak the performance of it. What I like about the vinyl is it's non-permanent like paint and helps to actually protect the paint underneath from chips and scratches. If I were to opt for a two-tone design, I'd do vinyl too.

Vynil? Didn't know about that. I though it was actually flat paint, like those used on tractors.
What is this, like a sticker?
How much? Why don't we see it more on the streets?

you actually DO see it on the street, you probably just don't know it. Ever see a city bus covered in graphics? Thats vinyl. Same thing for commercial vehicles that have graphics that are of a substantial size.
Its possible to paint a vehicle flat black, but Tim said "wrapped" and that typically means with the vinyl. Its pretty costly, so thats why you don't see it mainstream. However, I believe there are threads here with at least a GT-R and a Lambo done the same way.

Humm, I'd like to see an FX in flat black...I might be interested -- protects the paint, no more wax, no more scratches?
hummm. More than $1500.00? If so, that's a factory paint job, right, so you'd better off (monetarily) just respraying with factory paint, if protection is your main concern...
Also, it looks cool, but maybe if the car is not exotic, it would look ricey?
I have to see it in person. City buses certainly do not look as "tight" as this one appears to be.

Factory paint job has got to be significantly more than that, no?

I know a bumper costs $300.00 at my dealer, maybe $100 in a bodyshop. Maybe it's 4K at the dealership tops? So I figured $1500 would be aprox. 3x less than at the dealer. I mean, it's just a respray! If we're not talking about changing the color (You don't need to paint door seals, engine bay, etc.). You're just taking off scratches and old, uncared for paint?
Again, I have no idea. Maybe it's 10 grand at the bodyshop, and 20K at the dealer...I've seen crazier charges for labor.
The point is, how much is this vynil job anyway? Is it durable?
(I just love not waxing)

I think HD found a shop in NJ that does it, cause he was looking at vinyl stripes on his G. Maybe he can give us an estimate of cost.

Shops that do the wraps typically charge $2500-5000. It's about as much as it would cost to repaint your car at a good shop, IF you weren't doing a full frame respray. As in not pulling the engine, painting the engine bay, door jambs, trunk, etc...
For a color change, it offers a lot of flexibility.

plus if your car is new you should cost compare it to painting your car TWICE because you can take the vinyl off and restore back to the old color. So in this case he paid to change his color to flat black, but he can get it back to silver essentially free.

Ouch, that's expensive. It's just a plastic sticker. Definitely not for me, plus, this only make sense if you have fully custom with a twin turbo, carputer, and the rest.
I suppose this is fully warranted, and that it can be covered by your insurance? Imagine a minor fender bender, or just something that could be a $100 scratch rapair turns into a $3000 full blown vynil replacement?

I beleive the owner stated to wrap the car and fly someone in from TX, it was around $4k.
Another issue that was brought up about wrapping the car is that if the wrap is on long enough and exposed to the elements, the paint underneath would possible flake off when undoing the wrap. Not sure how accurate this is.
